5 Premier League Teams likely to be effected by FA’s potential cap on Foreign Players2 min read

Brexit seems to be affecting the Premier League now with the English FA Suggesting a reduced cap on the Number of Foreign Players.

The current laws of the Premier League allow teams to have a maximum of 17 Foreign players in their 25-man Squad and provided FA’s Suggestion becomes a law, we could see that number go down to 13. So, Given the current ratio of Foreign to English/Welsh Players where would your favorite Club stand if this Rule is applied. Without further ado, the Top 5 Premier League Clubs that are likely to be most affected by FA’s suggestion.

1. Manchester City- 17 Players

Unsurprisingly, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have a full quota of their 17 foreign players as players like Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Aguero, David Silva, and Ederson form the core of the Sky Blues. Though Manchester City have English Players like Kyle Walker, Raheem Sterling, John Stones, Fabian Delp and Phil Foden they also have homegrown players like Spanish International Brahim Diaz who would be considered as an English homegrown player. If the rule is implemented it’s safe to say that Manchester City will be in trouble.

2. Tottenham Hotspur- 17 Players

This one’s a surprise. Considering Majority of England’s World Cup Squad comprised of Spurs players with the likes of Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Eric Dier, Danny Rose, Keiran Trippier and Harry Winks will be all set to become the side’s most important players. To be honest, when you have a look at Tottenham’s Squad List a lot of the Foreign Players are squad players and don’t play a key role in the team like Georges-Kévin N’Koudou, Juan Foyth, Fernando Llorente and Paulo Gazzaniga. If the FA does put a cap on the foreign players you can bank on Spurs to replace these players with talented Homegrown or English Youngsters from their Academy. No Problem.

3. Brighton and Hove Albion- 17 Players

We don’t usually associate small Clubs in the Premier League with a full quota of foreign players but Brighton is a Surprise. With Jose Izquierdo, Pascal Gross, Anthony Knockaert and Shane Duffy comprising of the core group of players. The ‘Seagulls’ have just started playing well under Chris Hughton and are a comfortable Five places clear of the relegation zone. It’ll be a shame if they have to rebuild their squad.

4. Watford- 17 Players

Javi Garcia’s side has looked extremely impressive this Season and are at an impressive 7th place on the Premier League. But the Club has 17 Foreign players with overseas players like Etienne Capoue, Roberto Pereyra and Jose Holebas to name a few. There isn’t a lack of English talent in the team with captain Troy Deeney, Midfielder Tom Cleverley, and Forward Andre Gray also playing pivotal roles. Watford will be skeptical if the FA imposes the rule bringing the number of players down to 13. Major transfers will have to be imposed

5. Huddersfield Town- 17 Players

A Club that finds itself in a relegation battle at 19th place and also have an abundance of foreign players. Difference between Huddersfield and the other teams on this list is that the foreign players are barely performing and maybe losing a few of these underperformers may not be such a bad idea after all.
