Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom is on the verge of signing for Greek giants PAOK after failing to make it to Arsenal’s pre-season squad for the International Champions Cup.

Akpom will leave his boyhood club after making just 12 first-team appearances in all competitions for Arsenal, with a move to Greek side PAOK imminent. This will be a permanent deal and Unai Emery’s side will receive a reported £2 million.

The former England Under-21 international has spent several seasons out on loan with his most recent spell at Sint-Truidense V.V in Belgium, where he netted 6 times in 16 matches last season. He was wanted by Sint-Truidense after his relative successful stint with the club last season but it is surmised that Greek side PAOK have won the race to sign him.

Akpom is a product of the Arsenal Youth Academy and has been with the club since he was just 6-years-old. The 22-year-old made his debut for Arsenal back in 2013 but failed to establish himself in the first-team. Under the guidance of Arsene Wenger, he underwent loan spells with 6 different clubs but he never managed to impress.

With Danny Welbeck and Lucas Perez ahead of Akpom in the pecking order and even young Eddie Nketiah has hit the floor running at Arsenal, the striker wasn’t anticipated to be part of Unai Emery‘s plans going into next season.

Chuba Akpom will travel to Thessaloniki on Monday where he is set to finalize his permanent move. The 22-year-old striker now gets a chance to kick-start his career as he is now at an age where he should be concentrating on playing regular football rather than learning.

The Gunners are also expected to sell both Carl Jenkinson and Joel Campbell this summer. They are, however, closing in on a new deal for Alex Iwobi, with Emery confirming that the Nigerian was “near” an extension to his contract last week.
