The Vancouver Whitecaps announced that the deal could be worth up to £18.8 million if certain targets are met. US media reports stated Bayern had paid an initial fee of £11.1 million for Alphonso Davies. The deal further includes a 15% sell-on clause, which will yield the Whitecaps a portion of any future fee that Bayern receive for Alphonso Davies.
The 17-year-old midfielder has signed a 5-year-contract which runs from January 2019 until June 2023, the two clubs confirmed. Alphonso Davies will play the remainder of the MLS season before joining Bayern in January.
Davies said: “As a kid, I always dreamed of a moment like this. Now that the dream has come true, the work continues as always.”
“I have to keep pushing and keep striving, and also keep being me on the field. Ever since I joined the ‘Caps when I was 14, they molded me throughout the years into the pro that I’ve become.”

The record-breaking transfer is the newest step on an extraordinary rise of the Canadian teenager. Alphonso Davies was born in a refugee camp in Ghana in 2000 after his parents fled fighting in the second Liberian civil war. When he was five, his family moved to Canada as refugees.
Kovac said: “He’s very young, and he’s very talented. Lots of clubs want to have him.”
“He’s a young player, and young players, when they are as good as him, are very expensive because a lot of clubs are interested in him – and I’m sure because a lot of clubs are interested in him the price might go up.”
“He’s very fast, he’s very talented, he’s very good. I believe he has a very big future if he gets the right training.”
