After the Gunners completed the first signing of Unai Emery’s reign with the arrival of Stephan Lichsteiner on a free transfer from Juventus earlier this week, they have also reportedly reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund to sign their Greek centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos, with the transfer due to being announced next month. Arsenal is now close to signing Sampdoria’s defensive midfielder Lucas Torreira, according to reports in Italy, specifically Italian news agency ANSA. The reports claim that Sampdoria has already signed Lokomotiv Zagreb midfielder Lovro Majer, which paves the way for Torreira’s departure.

Earlier this week, Gazzetto Dello Sport claimed that the Gunners had entered the race to sign Torreira, alongside Napoli and Borussia Dortmund. After Calciomercato said “Arsenal mean business” in the hunt for Torreira, local outlet sampnews24 have now added fuel to the fire, saying that Arsenal has actually agreed to a deal with the club. Arsenal is apparently more than willing to pay out his release clause with the fee reportedly close to £22 million. The midfielder checks out on the Arsenal criteria: defensive midfield solution and low price.

Arsenal is in the market for a new midfielder following the departure of Santi Cazorla, while Jack Wilshere is set for talks with Emery before signing his new deal with the club.

Unai Emery is planning to instill a high pressing style at his new club, and the snappy, ball-hawking, ankle-biting defensive midfielder Torreira would be a perfect fit alongside Granit Xhaka, allowing the Swiss international to fire on all cylinders on his preferred position. He is quick across the ground, sharp in the tackle (2.8 tackles/match) reads the game excellently, boasting very good interception statistics (2.0 interceptions/match) in the Serie A last season while Granit Xhaka averaged 1.0 interceptions/match in the Premier League.
Lucas Torreira didn’t put a foot wrong in his substitute appearance and initiated some dangerous moves.
He immediately became the footballing leader of the midfield. El Maestro has to start him.
I’ve said it for months, Torreira is the best Uruguayan midfielder. pic.twitter.com/kjFd7u6Oz0

The midfielder is currently with Uruguay’s national team and is preparing for the upcoming FIFA World Cup this year. The fans are over the moon with the reported links to Torreira, praying that their club gets a deal done before the start of the World Cup. Here are a few tweets to prove the statement.
Unai Emery reportedly spoke personally with Lucas Torreira in order to convince him of a move and to sign a 5-year contract. I have quite literally run out of super laxatives to describe this man.

Torreira is young, solid defensively and more than capable on the ball. On paper he looks like a great partner for Ramsey and Xhaka and at 22 he’s only going to improve. Not to mention that €25m is next to nothing in today’s market. Hopefully the rumours from Italy are accurate.

Lucas Torreira is nothing short of a magical talent. Should Arsenal sign him, they’ll have made one of the finest summer acquisitions without a doubt.
