Atletico Madrid registered their first win of the 2018/19 La Liga Season when they came out on top against Rayo Vallecano with a 1-0 result at the Wanda Metropolitano. Antoine Griezmann scored the winner for the Los Rojiblancos, neither the World Champion nor the Club were at their best, and despite the win, it looks like Atleti will take a few games to find their rhythm.

Rayo Vallecano give Atletico a taste of their own medicine
Rayo Vallecano were everything Atletico Madrid is renowned for; they were organized in defence, focused and hard working. Rayo were languishing in the 2nd division for the last two Seasons and if they can go on to put in this kind of performance week in week out they can definitely stay in the La Liga for the next few Seasons. Atletico weren’t at their best and in the first half it took Atleti 37 minutes to create their first chance, new signing Thomas Lemar’s shot drew a good save from Rayo keeper Alberto Garcia.

Griezmann scores the winner but the World Cup hangover continues
Antoine Griezmann is Atletico Madrid’s most important player and you could see the pride on the fans faces when Griezmann walked onto the pitch with the World Cup in hand. Griezmann was amazing in Russia but the Frenchman still seems fatigued and his lack of fitness was evident against Rayo Vallecano.
But as they say, form is temporary class is permanent. Griezmann is still such an intelligent layer as he tapped in Stefan Savic’s pass from close range to Seal the win for Atletico Madrid.
Jan Oblak saves the day…Again!
Atleti’s front line had an off day, but with a goalkeeper of Jan Oblak’s quality, the forwards can afford an off day. Rayo players, Adrian Embarba, Jose Pozo and Sergio Moreno all came close to snatching an equalizer in the closing stages, but every time Oblak stood tall and ensured Atletico Madrid came out with the three points.
