Atletico Madrid beat La Liga minnows Huesca 3-0 in a midweek fixture while Title rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid both dropped points. By virtue of the win, Atletico move up to third place in the La Liga table, just two points adrift of League Leaders Barcelona and Real Madrid. Diego Simeone’s men are looking much more solid now after a shaky start to the Season, the Los Rojiblancos have now won 3 games on the bounce, beating AS Monaco and Getafe before the win on Tuesday.

Atletico Madrid needed three goals to put the result beyond question and all of their Goals came in the First-Half. Atleti opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Diego Costa selflessly assisted Antoine Griezmann after an impressive cut-back. Diego Costa may be going through a Goal Drought in the La Liga but it isn’t stopping the Spaniard from creating Goals. Thomas Partey doubled Atletico’s lead just before the half an hour mark with a sensational strike from 25 Yards and just four minutes later added a third goal through Koke. The Spanish midfielder intended to pass the ball to Angel Correa but ended up scoring instead, the goal was initially disallowed but the decision was rightfully overturned by VAR.
Gimenez Injury and an eye on the Derby
Atletico Madrid’s Uruguayan Centre-Back, Jose Maria Gimenez suffered a calf injury just before half-time, forcing Lucas Hernandez to take his place. Diego Simeone is certain that the Uruguay International will be fit for the Madrid Derby on Sunday. Simeone took advantage of his team’s 3 goal cushion and even took off key forwards Antoine Griezmann and Diego Costa early in the Second Half, replacing them with Nikola Kalinic and Gelson Martins respectively. Clearly, Simeone has an eye on Sunday’s Madrid Derby, a win against Real could take Atletico to second place and close the gap on Leaders Barcelona.
