Atletico Madrid got back to winning ways against Real Sociedad with Diego Godin and Filipe Luis on the scoresheet in a convincing 2 – 0 Win.

Atletico Madrid registered a solid 2-0 win against Real Sociedad to go on top just Hours before Title rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona take on each other. The Los Rojiblancos went on top of the table last night with a win over Real Sociedad, Atleti are just one point clear of Barcelona but the Blaugrana have a game in hand over Diego Simeone’s men. Barcelona takes on Real Madrid in the Season’s first El Classico, the game holds a lot of significance with respect to Atletico’s position on the points table and they will be hoping that Barcelona drop points against Real tonight to ensure they have a genuine chance at retaining the top spot in La Liga.

Diego Simeone’s Men bounced back from an embarrassing 4 – 0 loss in the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund with a solid performance against Sociedad. That loss was Diego Simeone’s heaviest loss as Atletico manager during his 7-year-long spell as manager but the Los Rojiblancos seem to have put the loss behind them and for the time being are at the top of the table.

Atletico Madrid started the game slowly with Antoine Griezmann’s overhit volley presenting itself as the only decent chance. But the hosts went in front just on the brink of half-time, winger Angel Correa showed some good movement before taking a shot that deflected off of central defender Raul Navas and the ball then found Captain Diego Godin who put the ball in the bottom-right corner. At half-time French World Cup Winning defender, Lucas Hernandez was taken off as a precaution to a muscle problem and was replaced by Brazilian Full-Back Filipe Luis.

Though Atleti were very organized in defence, the team failed to showcase their best football, but as they have done so often under Simeone, the team showed persistence and perseverance to win the game. Atletico Madrid added a second goal at the hour mark when Filipe Luis took an outstanding shot that flew into the top corner past former Atletico Goalkeeper Miguel Angel Moya to consolidate Atleti’s position.

The game was sealed and any time the visitors seemed to find themselves in a positive position, Atleti’s Rodri would intercept the ball right off of them. The young Spaniard proved once again that he is one of the best upcoming CDM’s in the world.
