England’s whitewash series over Australia

England VS Australia

The fifth and final one-day international match at Old Trafford on Sunday saw England gain a full victory over Australia ending the series at a final score of 5-0. Jos Buttler’s undefeated 110 saw the team to a one-wicket win over their opponents. This is England’s first ever whitewash win over Australia in the 140 years the teams have battled each other on the field internationally.

But it didn’t seem like England had this win in the bag until Buttler came in. They got off to a disastrous start with a target of 206 to chase and a score of 114 for 8. Buttler then came in and reduced the target to 11 runs shy of a victory. Adil Rashid (20) helped his partner to put 81 runs on the board and was dismissed just when the game was turning its luck.

Australia has not been having a good ride with ODIs recently as this adds on as their sixteenth defeat in their last 18 ODI matches. This includes nine defeats out of ten matches against England itself. Although this may be England’s first whitewash victory over the Land Down Under, Australia is no stranger to whitewash defeats as they faced one recently at the hands of South Africa. This may just be their wake-up call to up their game in the ODI series.

England, however, had a record-breaking win in their third match with a score of 481-6 at Trent Bridge, following that with a victory with five overs to spare in Durham on Thursday.

Buttler broke some personal records himself facing 100 balls for the first time in an ODI match. Openers Jason Roy (304) and Jonny Bairstow (300) were the leading run-scorers. Buttler made a total of 275 runs but was the bigger threat in the series being dismissed only twice. Spinners Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid took out a combined total of 24 wickets. They did not let slip many runs either with an average of 5.09 to 5.60 runs per over.

Australian Captain Tim Paine had a disappointing performance as he found himself run out for one in the final match, ending his series total at 36 – the lowest scored by an Australian captain in a five-day series.

“We should have chased that total down with ease, but it’s fantastic to win it. They’re so enjoyable when you win by a wicket. It’s a good habit to have, knowing how to win and finding a way to win when you probably shouldn’t. Adil Rashid played a fantastic hand, and so did Jake Ball. He soaked it up and handled it brilliantly.”, said Man of the Match, Jos Buttler.

“Today was mesmerizing. Jos was outstanding. Everyone in that changing room is very proud of him. We were very poor today and Jos really did pull something special out to get us over the line.”, said England captain Eoin Morgan.

“We’ve certainly been taught a lesson by a world-class outfit. We had them under pressure. Jos and Rashid played really well but we didn’t get enough balls in the right area. With a bat, ball and in the field during this series, we’ve folded a little bit.”, said Australian captain Tim Paine.

Jos Buttler knew that it was down to him. You get a sense that he really enjoyed it – MS Dhoni and AB de Villiers are like that. You need to have a huge amount of inner belief and strength. Without him, this England team would be a very good one. With him, they’re outstanding.”, said former England captain Michael Vaughan.

Another international series down as Australia will attempt to rise back from the ashes and England celebrates a mark made in history.

World’s Top 10 Opening Duos in Cricket

Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar

Cricket is a game in which the anticipation starts as soon as the opening duo gets on that field. A solid initial partnership can go a long way for the later part of the game. It builds the basis for the rest of the batting line-up to build upon. Here are some of the best opening duos in the history of cricket:

(1) Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar: The two Indian legends top the list as one of the greatest, if not the best, opening pairs the cricket world has ever seen. Years after their retirement, they are still praised and bowed down to for the mark they made individually and together on cricket players and fans alike. The duo played for Team India for almost eleven years, for around 136 innings and a combined total of 6609 runs. The unbeatable pair has scored 21 hundred-plus scores and 23 fifty-plus scores, clearly, they almost always took the team to a flying start. The highest score their partnership fetched was 258 runs

Pre-Match Analysis, India Vs Afghanistan One-Off Test Match

INDIA VS AFGHANISTAN

India Vs Afghanistan: India is all set to host Afghanistan for their debut Test match tomorrow in Bangalore as together they are about to make history.

Afghanistan is exuberant with high spirits and confidence as they enter their first ever Test series. Although the country is war-ravaged, they remain resilient. India, on the other hand, will be entering without captain Virat Kohli who is sitting out due to injury. Although he has been replaced by stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane, it will not be the same as Kohli will know his team’s strengths and weaknesses as well as tactics better than his double.

As Afghanistan coach Phil Simmons said, his men won’t understand what Test cricket is until they get onto the field. So Afghanistan definitely has a good international cricket history and their individual players have shown a lot of promise but will they be able to execute their abilities to the highest level in this new format? Captain Ashgar Stanikzai made a confident statement about how the home team’s bowlers put together are no match for his spinners. This pompousness seems to indicate that the team is unaware of what they’ve really signed up for.

To which, Dinesh Karthik replied, “Our Kuldeep Yadav (2 Tests) has played more first-class games than all their spinners put together. I know from where it’s coming but I wouldn’t to harp too much on that.”

When you say spinner, obviously the first name to come to mind is Rashid Khan who has created a whirlwind of sorts around the skill and finesse he displayed during the Indian Premier League. Now it all comes down to how well he can maintain executing that very dangerous quick arm speed in a complete fifty-over game. This won’t just test his skill but also patience and endurance. This may just be Rashid Khan’s most important exam before entering some of the top names in cricket history. He should be supported by Mujeeb Ur Rahman who also had a pretty good IPL outing and wicketkeeper Mohammed Shahzad.

India, however, does have experience which may just allow them to run through this smoothly even in the absence of Virat Kohli. Every player knows his part and Rahane from his side may have to put little to no effort in bringing the already well-oiled machine to start.

As per T20 format, KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan have been having a good year with the bat so it is very likely they will be opening to set the pace for the home team. Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara have the ability to stay on the field for a longer duration, especially with no pressure of an asking rate. However, there is a chance of Karun Nair making an appearance in place of Murali. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja will rival the opponent spinners while Kuldeep Yadav seems to be the team’s hope as per Dinesh Karthik’s statement. If DK makes the cut for the line-up, this will be the first Test since 2010.

Afghanistan has the best bowling sector with a variety of players to choose from. Zahir Khan as the left-arm wrist spinner bowler, mystery bowlers Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman and all-rounders Mohammed Nabi and Amir Hamza. If selected, Mujeeb will be the first player to be born in the 21st century and play in the Test series.

This will be a win-win in any case for the guests as even coming this far will be deemed as a victory. But this will be very interesting to watch nonetheless as once again experience will be weighed against exuberance.

Squads:

India: Ajinkya Rahane (captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, KL Rahul, Karun Nair, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur, Navdeep Saini, Ravichandran Ashwin. Ravindra Jadeja. Kuldeep Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav.

Afghanistan: Ashgar Stanikzai (captain), Mohammed Shahzad (wk), Javed Ahmadi, Rahmat Shah, Ihsanullah Janat, Nasir Jamal, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Afsar Zazai, Mohammed Nabi, Rashid Khan, Zahir Khan, Amir Hamza Hotak, Sayed Ahmad Shirzad, Yamin Ahmadzai Wafadar, Mujeeb ur Rahman.

Football fervor taking over the country

adidas-telstar-18-official-orange-soccer-ball

With IPL season over, it’s time for football to take the spotlight. Starting from one of the biggest metropolitan cities in India, Mumbai has adapted to the season quite quickly as they take off their Mumbai Indians’ jerseys to wear their favorite footballer jerseys.

The football spirit has taken over areas like Madanpura and Borivali as the FIFA World Cup approaches on June 15th. The fans have been divided as they find their team to support but united they will stand to watch the matches together.

What are live matches without a crowd? Housing societies in the city are setting up community theaters all provided with television sets, snacks, and cold drinks to make the experience an unforgettable one.

Although India hasn’t qualified for the international tournament, the craze for football in the country hasn’t gone down with aspiring professional footballers debating over what they can do to improve and make it through next time. Indian football skipper, Sunil Chhetri’s plea to give the sport some love was well-received and has become the talk of the town.

South India has no less of football fans with Vanchiyoor Junction in Thiruvananthapuram is also being set up to become a hub for the football fever. With the matches being screened on a big screen, an auditorium that can hold around 500 people has also been built in order to give the football fans an all-round opportunity. If this isn’t amazing enough, football academy trainees in the district are planning a march donning the jerseys and flags of all the 32 participants in the Cup from Museum Junction at 4:30 pm IST tomorrow to the Vanchiyoor Junction. Even the children will be given a chance to participate as the cartoon, essay-writing and quiz competitions will be arranged by the Thiruvananthapuram District Football Association (TDFA).

With less than a day for the FIFA World Cup to start, the country’s gearing up to use this as an outlet for their passion for the game. Are you?

South Africa declared IPL like premier league

South Africa declared IPL like premier league

Cricket South Africa (CSA) declared an Indian Premier League like international Twenty20 tournament further on this year. It is said to feature some of the country’s top players and international stars.

Partnering with South African television company SuperSport, Thabang Moroe, CSA acting chief executive says this would be “the biggest in the history of South African domestic cricket.”

Confirming the development, Moroe stated, “CSA is delighted to announce this equity partnership with our long-term broadcast partners, SuperSport. We have put the problems we experienced with the proposed Global T20 League behind us and look forward to hosting the new competition (which will be named later). This event will create wonderful opportunities for local players (including current Proteas and up and coming youngsters) to hone their white-ball skills.”

SuperSport chief executive Gideon Khobane also expressed satisfaction and said, “CSA has been an outstanding partner of SuperSport’s for many years. This agreement sees our relationship taken to the next level, where we will pool our mutual resources in a partnership which will create high-quality cricket and provide entertaining content for cricket fans locally and broadcast viewers both domestically and globally.”

“To have Proteas and international stars competing together with local talent will improve the quality of T20 cricket produced by South Africa,” Cricbuzz quoted him saying.

This is their second attempt at something similar to their previous idea of staging the T20 Global League collapsed due to the fall-out between the then CSA Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat and the board. He is said to have departed because no television deal or major sponsors were ready to sign onto the project.

The Global League was to be a city-based franchise with seven to eight teams, each owned by a foreign owner. For example, Shah Rukh Khan-owned the Cape Town Team while the Johannesburg Team was owned by the GMR group, who also owns the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL.

According to Moroe, however, the owners have been refunded their deposits after the sudden cancellation. This loss cost the CSA around 180 million rands (i.e. about 13.7 million dollars). The association had to compensate for almost 144 players who had been signed for the tournament.

This new league is said to replace the Global T20, however, but will not include any private ownership after their disastrous walk down that path the last time. This will be comparatively shorter due to previous commitments made by the South African cricket team. It is said to start after November 17th, right after the team finishes three One Day Internationals and a T20 international in Australia.

“The announcement of a new T20 competition is positive news and will be widely welcomed by the players,” said SACA chief executive, Tony Irish. “The fact that a broadcast deal has already been secured through arrangements with SuperSport to take this event to fans in South Africa and globally, is further good news. Although we are not yet privy to the details of the deal or exactly how the competition is to be structured, it is hoped that the upfront involvement of SuperSport will ensure its sustainability and promote its visibility.”

Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman spin could be threat for India in the coming test!

Rashid Khan Mujeeb Ur Rahman

Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman are to lead the spin attack for the Afghanistan cricket squad in their one-off Test against India in Bengaluru, which is spurring off on June 14th. They will be joined by Zahir Khan and Amir Hamza Hotak to for a deadly combo of four.

Rashid Khan has made a reputation for himself as a dangerous threat to watch out for. Earning a spot among the world’s best spinners, he created quite a tornado in the Indian Premier League this year as a part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He recently won the CEAT title for the best T20 bowler as well. The 19-year old is on top of his form and is backed by many cricket veterans who have showered him with praise. Including Kane Williamson, who led SRH to the IPL finals.

“He’s a world-class player. We have seen that in this format but it’s great that he’s going to play some Test cricket. It is a challenge for anyone but an enjoyable challenge because he’s up there with the top spinners in the game,” Williamson said.

“It’s always a pleasure to face him at the nets and against him as well in the near future. A very very good bowler but like you said, if the wicket’s responding, like any spinner that offers him a bit more. But, fantastic bowler. The full package Rashid is, it is great to have him in the side and he had a brilliant year.”

Mujeeb Ur Rahman also created a flutter in the IPL tournament as one of the youngest players to be a part of the T20 series. The 17-year old played as a part of Kings XI Punjab and made the headlines in the first few games for showing glimpses of brilliance. Although his team did not come out smoothly, he definitely created a good name for himself with 14 wickets off 11 games. As per an interview he gave to the Hindustan Times, he had a few words to say about the upcoming Test.

Image result for mujeeb ur rahman

“India has a good batting line-up with the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, KL Rahul, and others. I don’t bowl keeping any batsman in mind. My strategy would be the same for all Indian batsmen. I am positive and bracing for the challenge. Knowing the conditions in Bangalore will help,” he said.

The duo has taken the world by storm but they will be facing a different kind of battle this time. Being so young, Rashid has participated in only four first-class matches while the Test would be Mujeeb’s first time. They may be new to longer formats but their vibrant and passionate outlook on cricket may be the added edge to push them through this and emerge as rising stars.

Team India will be led by stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane in place of Virat Kohli. He was also full of praise for Rashid Khan and is confident about facing the Ashgar Stanikzai-led team.

“He is doing really well, especially the shorter format – T20, he did fantastic for Sunrisers, he is a quality bowler and everyone needs to accept and respect that. Afghanistan can’t be taken lightly, because in cricket and in general in life you cannot take anything for granted,” Ajinkya Rahane said.

“Qualifying for a Test is the biggest thing for Afghanistan cricket and that is good for cricket. We don’t want to take any team lightly. We just want to go out there and play with the same intensity as we do with every other team.”

All the best to both!

Why is everyone praising Mayanti Langer after IPL?

Mayanti Langer

Return of Warner, Bancroft in July

David Warner

Australian cricketers, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft will be returning to the field for the NT Strike League in Darwin. This is a month-long commitment consisting of T20 and one-day matches and four franchises – Desert Blaze, City Cyclones, Northern Tide, and Southern Storm.

David Warner used to be an opening batsman for the Australian Tests along with Cameron Bancroft.

Warner and Bancroft made the headlines for their involvement in the ball tampering scandal in their third Test against South Africa which took place in March. They were handed a one-year and nine-month suspension respectively from top-flight international and state cricket.

However, the Strike League being a low-level, limited-overs tournament does not come under either of those categories and hence, allowed both to be drafted.

According to Joel Morrison, however, the duo will be covering their own costs to play.

Bancroft will be participating for the entirety of the tournament while Warner will take part in two one-day matches on July 21st and 22nd.

“I’m really looking forward to playing in the Strike League in July. I heard so much about the competition while I was in Darwin earlier this month that I’m keen to be part of it,” Warner said in a statement on Tuesday.

“We’re delighted that Cameron and David will be joining us in Darwin for the Strike League, their presence and experience will be invaluable for our local players,” NT Cricket CEO Joel Morrison said.

‘There’s no payment to any players in our competition. These two players are coming up here, looking after their own flights and accommodation. We don’t lose sight of the fact that they’re up here because of the events in Cape Town. They made a big error in judgment and ultimately paid the price. They’ve also demonstrated a willingness to learn from their mistakes and move forward.’

“We’re more than happy to support them on that journey. It’s great they can start it now, as opposed to waiting for summer”, he added.

Steve Smith, the former Captain of the Australian International Cricket Team,  will also be making a return to cricket for the Global T20 Tournament in Canada and he is to be joined by Warner as well. Warner will be joining in as a marquee player. The tournament extends from 28th June to 15th July.

Warner was selected in the third round by the Winnipeg Hawks after Dwayne Bravo and David Miller, while Smith has been taken in by the Toronto Nationals along with Darren Sammy and Keiron Pollard.

Warner is also taking part in the Sydney club tournament for Randwick Petersham. Bancroft will be playing with his West Australian club side – Willetton – further along, this year.

It will not be a smooth comeback for any of them after everything that has happened but this will be the first step to their recovery in the game. We wish all three the best of luck!

Josh Hazlewood leaves gaping hole in pace attack for Australia

Josh Hazlewood

Josh Hazlewood has been pulled from the Australian National cricket team for the ODI series next month against England due to a lower back injury. The 27-year old posed as the front-line pace attack for the team with the experience of 21 ODI series.

With the absence of experienced bowlers, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, also due to injuries, it was expected that Hazlewood would take the lead of the bowling front but now with him backing out, Australia has a gaping hole of a total of 274 wickets to fill.

“Josh has been managing some low-level bone stress in his lumbar spine for a short period,” said CA physiotherapist, David Beakley.

“He had a repeat scan today and although it has not progressed to a fracture he is starting to experience some lower back pain. As such, we are taking a conservative approach and he will not travel to England for the one-day series.”

The tall pace bowler faced heavy workload with consecutive series as he played in all five Ashes Tests, the four Tests versus South Africa as well as three of five ODIs versus England. The right-arm-er has an impeccable record of 69 wickets from 41 games.

The veteran is to replaced by the uncapped Michael Neser from Queensland, who impressed at the Sheffield Shield as part of the Bulls. He gained a reputation as a skilled swing bowler in the domestic cricket scene.

He is to be assisted by Andrew Tye, Kane Richardson, Jhye Richardson and Billy Stanlake who have played only 4, 15, 1 and 2 ODI series respectively.

This comes as a massive blow especially after the suspension of batsmen, David Warner and Steve Smith, due to the ball-tampering scandal. With so many important team members missing, the team is going in with a stagger as they face the world’s number one ranked ODI side.

Led by Tim Paine, the team is to start the England tour on June 13th at The Oval. The team has a lot on their plate as they will play five ODIs and a T20 against England after which they’ll go to Zimbabwe for another T20.

Although the team does not look good on paper at the moment, captain Tim Paine still remains confident.

“Justin (Langer) sat us down for a team meeting last week and spoke about the Australian cricket team’s values, and what he expects,” Paine said. “It’s nothing that’s brand new, nothing the guys haven’t heard before — it’s purely about acting on what we know is the right thing to do and the right way to play our cricket.”

We’ve had Spirit of Cricket documents, we’ve had Code of Conduct documents, but at the end of the day, they mean nothing if you don’t act on them and you don’t live by them. That’s been a huge focus for us, has been around our actions, our behaviors and making sure we live up to the standards that the Australian cricket team should.”

“So we’ve spoken about it, but getting on a plane tonight now, we get to go over there and talk through our actions, which the guys are looking forward to. We’re not going over there to makeup or the numbers or be the nicest Australian cricket team ever to play against. We’re going to be really competitive, at the same time we’re going to be really respectful, but we’re going there to win.”

We should share the team’s confidence and support them on their way to the international cricket series.
