India VS West Indies First Test: The Firsts2 min read

After winning the first Test by a record-breaking margin of an innings and 272 runs, India is heading on with a lead for the 2nd Test of this series. The next match is scheduled to be held at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Friday, October 12. Before that, let’s look back on the first Test match wherein India defeated West Indies to take a lead of 1 – 0 in the series.

The Firsts

West Indies have been on a poor batting spree in India for long now. But speaking of the firsts, the damages caused reaped new accolades for some Indian players. Some of these have been much awaited and some astonished us all like a pleasant surprise.

The Dream Debut

Prithvi Shaw’s dream was finally channeled into reality with his debut on October 4. The 18-year-old made his selection count and more when he registered his first Test hundred in the very first innings of the match and his life. The little wonder later said to the press, “I was thinking of my Dad when I scored the hundred. He has sacrificed a lot of things for me. This knock is for him.”

Not only did he score a hundred on Test debut, but was also adjudged the Man of the Match for his performance. He became the sixth Indian player to win the Man of the Match award on debut. The previous five are Pravin Amre, RP Singh, R Ashwin, Shikhar Dhawan, and Rohit Sharma.

Ravindra Jadeja’s maiden Test hundred

Following Prithvi Shaw’s century, Indian batting saw two other centurions in the same innings. Jadeja, who was playing his 218th international match and his 38th Test, scored not only his maiden Test hundred but also his first international hundred for India. He celebrated his hundred with his trademark sword swing after which captain Virat Kohli declared India’s innings on 649/9 with Jadeja on 100 not out off 132 deliveries.

Kuldeep’s maiden Five wicket haul

After India’s lead in the first innings of 468 against West Indies in Rajkot, the Indian spinners got into dismantling the West Indies batsmen yet again. This time, that is in West Indies’ second innings, chinaman Kuldeep Yadav led the bowling front. He had taken five-fors in ODIs and T20Is before taking a five-for in the second innings of the Rajkot Test. By this, he completed a full set, all three in this year. The only other Indian bowler with this set is Bhuvaneshwar Kumar.
