Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund survived a major scare in the first round of the German cup as they scraped through a 2 – 1 victory against the second division side Fuerth. Borussia Dortmund who will play in the Champions League this year were on the brink of elimination after the hosts shocked them by scoring the opening goal against the run of play in the 77th minute of the game.

But new signing Axel Witsel fired a volley seconds before the final whistle and Marco Reus saved their blushed by netting a powerful shot across the goalkeeper to lead Dortmund to qualification to the second round of the German Cup. Dortmund who spent close to 70 million Euros this transfer window had numerous occasions to take the lead in the first half but squandered all of them. Dahoud, Reus, and Wolf all had their opportunities before the break but didn’t make them count. They controlled the game almost the entirety of the first half and should have gone into the break with a lead of at least 3 to 4 goals.
It was a similar story in the second half as Dortmund wasted many more opportunities in front of goal. US superstar Christian Pulisic hit the woodwork as Dortmund continued to dominate until they were punished for their wastefulness. Ernst slotted in from close range after a scintillating move by Fuerth down the wing. They then managed to keep Dortmund at bay until the last minute of the game when Axel Witsel scored a well-taken volley to equalize. A hard hit volley from captain Marco Reus ensured the progress of the Bundesliga giants into the next round of the German cup.
