FA Community Shield: Manchester City 2 – 0 Chelsea

FA Community Shield: Manchester City 2 - 0 Chelsea

Manchester City picked up exactly where they left off. Pep Guardiola’s team played with the same panache and confidence as they did last Season when they stormed past every team to clinch the Premier League title. It was a historic day for City’s Sergio Aguero who was a constant thorn in Chelsea’s back, scoring a brace in a 2-0 win and also scoring his 200th Goal for the “Cityzens” as they Clinched the Community Shield against Chelsea.

Chelsea’s Issues

On one side we saw a team with the perfect defensive organisation and well-timed attacks, but on the other side, we saw a decidedly below average team. Chelsea were poor against Man City and Maurizio Sarri had a forgettable Debut for the Club. Cesar Azpilicueta was his consistent self; Ross Barkley looks a much-improved player and Callum Hudson-Odoi continues to perform but barring these three players, Chelsea seemed very under-cooked. The Blues have issues on and off the pitch especially with Thibaut Courtois wanting to leave the Club. They will have to sort these issues out before the start of the Premier League Season or Maurizio Sarri maybe in for a very turbulent campaign.

What went right for City?

Aguero was obviously the major positive for Pep Guardiola’s side and was the Man of the match, but some other players made an impact as well. Fernandinho was absolutely solid at CDM, and Chelsea missed Kante on the day, Fernandinho made the team tick, and the Brazilian is an integral part of this Manchester City set up. But for me, the player that impressed immensely (Besides Aguero) was 18-Year-Old Phil Foden. Foden picked up an assist and was immensely pro-active in Midfield. Have a look at his numbers.

What’s next?

Manchester City plays Arsenal on Matchday 1 of the Premier League at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. Chelsea has one last International Champions Cup game on Tuesday against Lyon at Stamford Bridge before they take-on Huddersfield in their opening Premier League game.

Check Out- Manchester City VS Chelsea Preview

GK- Claudio Bravo (Manchester City)

Both Chelsea and Manchester City are going into this game without their first Choice keepers, Courtois and Ederson respectively. Bravo is immensely experienced and makes the cut ahead of Chelsea’s Caballero or Bulka.

LB- Marcos Alonso (Chelsea)

No defender has been involved in more goals in the Premier League (Since 2016) than Marcos Alonso. To add to that impressive stat Marcos Alonso is also a very effective Free-Kick specialist having scored three free kicks since his arrival at the Club.

CB- David Luiz (Chelsea)

David Luiz seems to be enjoying his Football under Maurizio Sarri and the Brazilian is slowly getting his rhythm back. On his day, Luiz can be one of the best defenders in the World.

CB-Antonio Rudiger (Chelsea)

Rudiger was Chelsea’s best Signing last Season and the former-Roma Centre-Back should start against Man City In Wembley.

RB- Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea)

Hands down the most consistent Defender in the Premier League. Azpilicueta has been amazing for the Blues and makes this team ahead of Kyle Walker on the basis of consistency. Also Considering the fact that Walker may not start this game.

CDM – Fernandinho (Manchester City)

The Brazil International has returned to full training with Manchester City and will probably start against Chelsea. Fernandinho was exceptional for Manchester City last Season and will be looking to hit the same level this year as well.

CDM(Deep Lying Playmaker) – Jorginho (Chelsea)

Jorginho has been impressive for his new Club and has misplaced only one pass in 180 minutes. The Italian National is helping his new teammates adapt to Maurizio Sarri’s style having already flourished under the Manager at Napoli.

CAM- Bernardo Silva (Manchester City)

Bernardo Silva spent a lot of time on the bench last Season but the Portuguese International has looked a much better player in Pre-Season and should play a bigger role at the Etihad this time around.

LW- Leroy Sane (Manchester City)

Leroy Sane was 2017/18 PFA Young Player of the Year and the German will be looking to continue Performing for Manchester City.

ST- Alvaro Morata (Chelsea)

Before you pounce on me and talk about Morata’s poor performances last Season and during Pre-Season, hear me out. Aguero and Jesus are yet to feature for Man City and Tammy Abraham or Lukas Nmecha don’t exactly make the cut.

RW- Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City)

Mahrez has shaken off a Knee injury and is ready to start against the Blues. Manchester City’s record signing will be hoping to start the Season with a bang to justify his hefty £60 Million price tag.

FA Community Shield: Manchester City VS Chelsea

Manchester City VS Chelsea - Community Shield

Chelsea and Manchester City will go up against each other on Sunday in Wembley with the community shield at stake. City were crowned Premier League Champions after an impressive League campaign that saw them finish 19 points clear of second-placed Manchester United. Chelsea, on the other hand, had a very underwhelming Season filled with controversy and below average performances. Despite all the negativity surrounding the Blues, they managed to beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final courtesy Eden Hazard’s solitary Goal from the spot.

The Community Shield is considered by many as the last Pre-Season friendly and considering teams are allowed six substitutes apiece it even feels like one. So let’s have a look at some team news.

Team News

Chelsea: Chelsea’s key players, Eden Hazard, Willian, N’Golo Kante and Thibaut Courtois are supposed to return to training on the eve of the game and are obviously not in contention for a starting spot. All four players have been linked with a move away from the Stamford Bridge but as of now, Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois’ exit seems most likely. According to the Sun, Cesc Fabregas is ruled out with a knee injury that leaves Ross Barkley, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Danny Drinkwater in contention to start with Jorginho in Sarri’s 3-man Midfield.

Predicted XI: Bulka, Alonso, Luiz, Rudiger, Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Barkley, Bakayoko, Hudson-Odoi, Morata, Pedro

Manchester City: Riyad Mahrez has recovered from an ankle injury he sustained against Bayern Munich and is in contention to start. Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne haven’t returned to training and the rest of City’s World Cup contingent that made it to the Semi-Finals have returned to training but may not start the game. Benjamin Mendy didn’t play a huge role in France’s World Cup win and is reported to make his first start for Man City since September 2017.

Predicted XI: Bravo, Mendy, Laporte, Otamendi, Humphreys, Fernandinho, David Silva, Foden, Sane, Aguero, Mahrez
