Cesc Fabregas with Thierry Henry: A special relation reunited in Monaco

Cesc Fabregas completed his move from Chelsea to French side Monaco to reunite with his old Arsenal teammate Thierry Henry.

Fabregas put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half-year deal at the Stade Louis II after passing a medical test. Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas are in Monaco, sixteen years after their first matches together at Arsenal. Because of their football careers, their career at the Gunners and Barcelona, the two men share a special relationship.

Fabregas with Henry: The beginning

Cesc Fabregas started his career with the first team of Arsenal during the 2003-04 season but played only a few matches for the London club, and without the enigmatic French striker. It was necessary to wait for the Community Shield at the dawn of the 2004-05 season to see the two players gel together. The Spaniard then took advantage of an injury to Patrick Vieira to settle in the team, who were invincible in the prior season with Pires, Bergkamp, Ljungberg and Gilberto Silva.

Henry: The captain

After the departure of Patrick Vieira to Juventus in 2005, Thierry Henry inherited the captain’s armband. And became – if it was not already – an idol for the young players of Arsenal as Fabregas, both demanding and close to their teammates, and attested this friendly exchange after a win over Liverpool in 2006 (2-1).

At the end of the 2005-06 season, Arsenal faced Barcelona in the Champions League final. Fabregas and Henry were both on the field, but the Gunners failed to win it at the end of the match. The Frenchman played one more season before going to the Catalan club, while Fabregas inherited Henry’s captain’s armband – but passed to William Gallas during the 2008-09 season.

Regular contacts

Even after Henry’s departure from Barcelona, the two men stayed in touch, as Fabregas told them in 2008,

” Thierry, what about him? He was the best player in the world when he was here (in Arsenal). I always talk to him on the phone so I will ask him for advice (on the role of captain).”

Their trajectories will brush a few years later when Fabregas signed at Barca. But Henry left the Blaugrana a year earlier for the New York Bulls.

Both players have been several times in the rankings of the Ballon d’Or. In 2006, when Henry finished third, Fabregas was selected but was not among the 30 finalists. The two names again appeared in the 30 in 2007 and 2009. And Fabregas each time lead the standings over the French. (Fabregas 8th and Henry 19th in 2007, Fabregas 12th and Henry 15th in 2009).

David Dein: The common one

Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas also share the same agent, Darren Dein. Lawyer and son of David Dein, the former vice-president of Arsenal and close to Arsene Wenger, the man has managed many former Arsenal players like Clichy, Song, Flamini and many others. Dein, who conducted negotiations for Fabregas with the management of Monaco, is known for rock hard in business. His demands during the negotiations to place Fabregas with Henry in the premises of Monaco were granted that led to this great reunion.
