Fabio Coentrao has addressed the false reports claiming that he was missing from Real Madrid since last season by posting a picture of himself training at the club’s complex.

The Portuguese defender used his Twitter account to say: “Training session ✅ Real Madrid ✅ Press ❌”

A number Spanish newspapers alleged that the defender had disappeared after his loan spell with Sporting Lisbon and did not participate in the preseason tour of the United States. Spanish newspaper AS wrote that he with a personal trainer on his own and not with the club.

Coentrao still has a year left on his contract with Real Madrid however, he is not named in Los Blancos’ squad for the upcoming season. He originally signed a 6-year deal and joined for a fee of €30 million from Benfica in 2011 and later signed a new deal which kept him at the club for another 5 years under Jose Mourinho.

In the past 5 seasons, the defender has played 106 matches for the club with two loan spells during that time, one at Monaco in the 2016-17 season and last season at Sporting Lisbon where he made 44 appearances and registered 1 goal and 3 assists for the Portuguese side. His career at Madrid was essentially plagued by injuries as the Portuguese suffered 18 injuries during the four seasons before he joined Monaco on loan.

At an international level, Coentrao has earned 52 caps and scored 5 goals for Portugal. However, the 30-year-old fullback was not a part of the World Cup squad for his country this year.

Since Coentrao is back, he could serve as a backup for Brazillian left-back Marcelo, as Theo Hernandez moved to Real Sociedad on loan. However, it is unclear whether the Portugal international will find a place Madrid, under new manager Julen Lopetegui.

Real Madrid faces Girona in their next La Liga fixture on 27th August, Monday.
