IPL 2018 | SRH vs CSK | Match 20: Chennai Super Kings defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad last night at Rajeev Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad, to move from second to the first position on the IPL points table.
Winning the toss, SRH opted to ball and they bowled exceptionally well to contain the strong CSK batsmen to 27-2 in the mandatory power-play – the lowest power-play score this season. Billy Stanlake and Bhuvneshwar were brutal, not allowing CSK’s openers to score more than two to three runs per over.
When Raina was joined by Rayudu after the dismissal of Faf Du Plessis, they had the job of rebuilding the innings and they had to do it in a brisk manner with only half the game left. Their partnership helped CSK gain their momentum, raising the score to 143.
Rayudu is in the form of his life. He had a great day as he attacked the SRH bowlers right from the go and stitched crucial 112 runs partnership with Raina. Rayudu got out for silly run-out and he finished with a brilliant 79 of 37 balls. He scored his fastest fifty last night, taking the SRH bowlers by storm. He may have even raised CSK to a 200 if he had started the innings.
Raina also reached his much-needed half-century just before the innings ended. He took his time before going for the super shots which are very unlike him but his patience paid off.
After the dismissal of Rayudu, Raina was joined by MS Dhoni. Both scored very quickly at the end and finished with 182 from 20 overs. 182 on this pitch was above par and appreciable with CSK’s slow start. It was a tough task ahead for SRH.
CSK had made one change to their squad with Faf Du Plessis replacing Imran Tahir. Faf was asked to open the innings with Watson but both fell prey to SRH’s bowlers and got out early.
SRH started the first innings well and had CSK on their back foot until Rayudu started to explore. Rashid Khan, their star bowler, was again disappointing today giving away 47 runs from his quota of 4 overs. He picked up Faf in his very first over, starting off great, but later on, both Raina and Rayudu smashed him to all parts of the ground.
Chasing 183 on a difficult track was always going to be tough for SRH. They didn’t even have the services of Shikhar Dhawan, arguably their best batsman. Dhawan was replaced by Ricky Bhui and he opened the innings with skipper Williamson. Bhui was unable to do justice to the position given to him as he got out almost as soon SRH’s innings began. Not a great start for SRH anymore.
SRH lost Bhui, Pandey, Hooda early on to Deepak Chahar within the first four overs. He made history as the first bowler to bowl a maiden over with a wicket in the IPL.
Captain Kane Williamson had a good little partnership with Shakib and Yousuf and scored a brilliant 84 off 51 balls. But SRH lost his wicket at a very crucial time in the match with only two overs left.
SRH lost wickets at important situations and had their moments when Rashid Khan had a dream day with the bat. They may have had different results with Shikhar Dhawan present. Match went on to the last ball requiring 6 runs but Bravo held his nerve and delivered it for CSK.
CSK proved their all-round excellence in cricket last night and have found a formidable rival to watch out for in their future games. It was a definite edge-of-the-seat thriller worth watching.
CSK plays next for their first game against Royal Challengers Bangalore at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore on 25th April while SRH will gear up for their match against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on 24th.
