Borussia Dortmund move to the top of the Bundesliga table after beating Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1 on Saturday.

English teenager Jadon Sancho continued his impressive form by playing a role in two of the three Dortmund goals after the half-time against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Maximilian Philipp flicked a Lukasz Piszczek cross over the crossbar with Dortmund’s opening, but Kevin Trapp was not being examined as much as he might have anticipated. Filip Kostic tried to beat Roman Bürki with Frankfurt’s first sight of goal but couldn’t. It was clear that the hosts held most of the early possession.

Indeed, it was a fairly scrappy affair and it possibly stood to conclude that the opening goal would follow that trend, with Abdou Diallo bundling in his first goal of the season in the 36th minute from close range at the second time of asking following a Jacob Bruun Larsen corner.

After an equally cagey start to the second half, Dortmund coach Lucien Favre sought to inject fresh people into his side’s attack with Jadon Sancho sent on and Paco Alcacer handed his debut. Only seconds after the Spaniard entered the fray, though, it was the number 9 at the other end Sebastien Haller who brought Frankfurt ag goal converting Danny da Costa‘s deflected cross and equalizing the scoresheet in the 68th minute.

They were on equal terms for only four minutes, before Sancho sprinted down the right wing, wrong-footed his marker and sent a cross over to Marius Wolf who ended up drilling in a volley, opening his Dortmund account against his former club in the 72nd minute.

In the 88th minute, Sancho dribbled into the box and his diverted pass fell to Paco Alcacer who added the 3rd goal for their side. It was like the proverbial cherry on top, firing in another Sancho assist, to mark his debut with a goal and three points. Jadon Sancho now has 4 assists in 4 games for Dortmund this season.

The win takes Dortmund top of the Bundesliga as they maintain their unbeaten start.

Dortmund face Club Brugge in their first UEFA Champions League fixture of the campaign on Wednesday, 19th September.
