Emile Smith Rowe was a member of the first-team squad that traveled to Singapore for Arsenal‘s pre-season tour. The 18-year-old made his mark with a sensational goal against Atletico Madrid in the International Champions Cup. Smith Rowe also provided an assist for Alexandre Lacazette in the next game where Arsenal beat PSG 5-1.
New head coach Unai Emery was full of praise on the youngster and he mentioned his plan to develop Emile Smith Rowe and the other young players.
Emery said: “I am pleased with Emile’s contribution so far this pre-season. He is working very hard and has lots of potentials. I look forward to working with him and the other young players and helping them to develop as Arsenal players.”
The Hale End graduate joined the Arsenal Academy as a 10-year-old and later matured as a regular for the club’s under-18 squad. Emile Smith Rowe further progressed and played 11 matches for the Arsenal under-23 squad last season at the age of just 17. The young midfielder made his debut for the first team in the pre-season friendly against Boreham Wood, which was also Unai Emery’s first match in charge.

After signing the new deal, Emile Smith Rowe talked to the club’s website about his new contract, how he’s adjusting to being around the first team, what his teammates told him after his goal in Singapore and so on.
Emile said: “To be honest it feels great for me [signing the new contract]. It’s something I’ve always dreamt of since I was young, so to sign a new contract with Arsenal… I’m just so happy and it feels surreal at the moment. Knowing how Arsenal play and knowing the background of the club is something I really look up to. The new head coach really inspires me so hopefully, I can get chances in the first team to prove how good I am.”
“It’s so crazy! [playing alongside his heroes] Training with the players that Arsenal have is a dream for me, something that I’ve been dreaming of since I was a kid. To get the opportunity to train and play with them on tour was just an unbelievable feeling for me. I just feel so much more comfortable. The players are so welcoming. No one’s tried to leave me out of the group or anything, so when I’m at Arsenal, it feels like a family. Everyone’s just so together and I think that’s helped me so much on and off the pitch.”
“My phone’s been going off so much since that [pre-season tour] happened! Since I got back, I’ve had so many good messages from fans and the support has just been crazy. I’m just so happy at the moment. It was my birthday recently so for me it’s just been a crazy week in general.”
“For this season I’m hoping to play for the under-23s but my main target [aims for the season] is to get minutes in the first team, progress, play well and impress the boss so I can maybe get chances in the Premier League one day.”
