Rory Burns has received his maiden Test call-up for the Sri Lanka tour.

Surrey opener Rory Burns has been rewarded with a place in the England squad for the Test series in Sri Lanka with Kent’s Joe Denly also included. Burns top scored in the County Championship with 1,319 runs will replace Alastair Cook in the 16-man touring squad.  Somerset’s Jack Leach is included alongside Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid to provide a third spin bowling option.

England Test squad: Joe Root (c), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Keaton Jennings, Jack Leach, Ollie Pope, Adil Rashid, Ben Stokes, Olly Stone, Chris Woakes.

Uncapped Warwickshire fast bowler Olly Stone who got his international call-up for the ODI series has also been incorporated into the squad for Tests. Stone got his place into the ODI squad as a replacement for Liam Plunkett who will miss the first three matches of the series to get married. Stone is currently one of the quickest bowlers in the country and has been a regular this season after recovering from previous injury problems. In this year’s Royal London One-Day Cup, Stone was the highest amongst wicket-takers, with 12 wickets at 28.17. Going against the speculations, England’s veterans Stuart Broad and James Anderson have not been rested and are included in the squad.
