Sevilla have completed the signing of French midfielder Maxime Gonalons on a season-long loan from Serie A side AS Roma.

A statement from Roma’s official website read: “The club can confirm that midfielder Maxime Gonalons has joined Sevilla on a season-long loan deal. The agreement with the Spanish club runs until 30 June 2019. Good luck Maxime!”

Sevilla FC and AS Roma have reached a negotiation for the loan of Maxime Gonalons. The 29-year-old French international is a defensive centre-midfielder, who has also performed as a centre-back in his recognised career.

Although he joins from Roma, Gonalons has devoted most of his sporting years advancing in the ranks of Olympique Lyonnais, with whom he lifted the French Cup in 2012 and the French Super Cup a few months later. Gonalons registered at the Lyon Academy at the age of just 11 and played his first team match at just 20 in a Champions League qualification match against Anderlecht. In that same season – 09/10 – he made 19 official appearances.

He grew in value and even though rumours circulated of a departure from France, he stayed there for 8 seasons, ultimately leaving in the 16/17 season. In total, he made 334 official appearances (60 coming in European competitions), scoring 12 goals and making 13 assists.

In the summer of 2017, Gonalons signed with AS Roma, where he encountered tough competition in the centre of the park but made 23 appearances – 16 in Serie A, six in the Champions League and one in the Italian Cup.

As an international, Gonalons debuted with France at the age of 22. Since then, he has earned 7 caps with Les Bleus.

Speaking about his move, Gonalons said: “The last season was a difficult one for me. But now I want to give everything for this club, they have put a lot of trust in me. I know that I’m coming to a club with high expectations, but I want to achieve great things here.”

Sevilla faces Villarreal in their next La Liga fixture on Sunday, 26th August.
