Group E Teams: Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland and Costa Rica.

The second round of games in Group E has come to a close and the qualification for the Round of 16 is going to go down to the wire. Brazil, Serbia, and Switzerland are all in contention but with only 2 spots up for grabs, what does your team need to do to seal qualification?

Group E, 1st Position: Brazil

Final Fixture: Brazil vs Serbia
27th June, 11:30 PM (IST)

Results: 1-1 vs Switzerland
                  2-0 vs Costa Rica

The Selecao had a slow start to their 2018 World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland. Against Costa Rica, the 5-time World Champions Looked much better especially in the second-half that saw them score 2 late goals to wrap up a 2-0 Victory. Brazil sits comfortably at the top of the table with 4 points and a goal difference of +2

A Win against Serbia will seal qualification to the Round of 16 and given their superior Goal Difference, Brazil will have a legitimate chance of topping their group.

A Draw, on the other hand, will put them on 5 points which is enough for qualification but gives Switzerland a chance to top the Group, provided they win against Costa Rica.

A Loss against Serbia will leave Brazil on 4 points with a goal difference of at least +1. This would mean that Serbia automatically qualifies and Brazil will need Switzerland to lose their game against Costa Rica.

In the event that two teams will be level on points as well as Goal difference, number of goals will be taken into consideration

Group E, 2nd Position: Switzerland

Final Fixture: Switzerland vs Costa Rica
27th June, 11:30 PM

Results: 1-1 vs Brazil
                  2-1 vs Serbia

The Swiss were the Dark horses coming into the Tournament and are ranked 6th in the FIFA rankings. Switzerland doesn’t possess any big names but is a team that thrives on their defensive organization and their ability to hit the opposition on the Counter. Switzerland started their World Cup on a high salvaging a draw against Group favorites Brazil and came out on top in a 2-1 thriller against Serbia. Switzerland is currently in second place with 4 Points and a Goal Difference of +1.

A Win against Costa Rica will Seal qualification to the Round of 16. Topping the group would be dependent on Brazil’s result against Serbia.

A Draw will give Petkovic’s men 5 Points, qualification will still be a big question mark for Switzerland and they will be dependent on the result of Brazil vs Serbia.

A Loss will be a big blow to the Swiss, they will need Serbia or Brazil to win the game and considering their Goal difference is lesser than Brazil’s, qualification could be tricky.

In the event that two teams will be level on points as well as Goal difference, number of goals will be taken into consideration.

Group E, 3rd Position: Serbia

Final Fixture: Serbia vs Brazil
27th June, 11:30 PM (IST)

Results: 1-0 vs Costa Rica
1-2 vs Switzerland

Serbia with the likes of Nemanja Matic, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, and Aleksandar Kolarov seemed like favorites to qualify after Brazil. The Serbs started well with a 1-0 victory against Costa Rica but faltered against Switzerland in a 1-2 nail-biter. Serbia is third on the points table with 3 points and a goal difference of 0.

A Win against Brazil will take Serbia to the Round of 16. If Serbia to go on to beat Brazil it would elevate them to 6 points and since Brazil would still be at 4 points, Serbia will automatically qualify.

A Draw will really make things interesting, Brazil will automatically qualify with 5 points and a goal difference of +2. Serbia will be hoping Switzerland lose against Costa Rica by a considerable margin owing to Switzerland’s greater Goal difference.

In the event that two teams will be level on points as well as Goal difference, number of goals will be taken into consideration

A Loss will bring an end Serbia’s tournament automatically.
