IPL 2019 is preponed due to the World Cup and the general elections being held in India. The BCCI announced that the IPL will begin on March 23, just days after India’s home series against Australia.
The IPL has always been a huge launching pad for youngsters, not only from India but from all around the world. This season as well, there are a huge number of cricketers who will make their IPL debut with the eyes of the world on them. But on the other hand, there will also be a number of cricketing legends who could very well be playing their last IPL this year. Here’s taking a look at the most likely players who could be playing their last IPL this year.
5. Shane Watson- Chennai Super Kings
The Australian legend retired from international cricket in 2016, but it did not stop him from playing all over the globe in various T20 tournaments. In IPL 2018, he was in incredible form, constantly reminding the spectators about the genius that he has always been. He scored 2 centuries, including one in the finals, playing a huge role in the success of the team. However, Watson is aging and is not the fittest cricketer on the field by a long shot. His form still stands, but this edition of the IPL might as well be his last.
He has had an outstanding record in the IPL nonetheless, scoring over 3000 runs in the tournament with 4 centuries and 92 wickets to his name in 117 matches.
4. Yuvraj Singh- Mumbai Indians
Ever since he was diagnosed with cancer during the 2011 World Cup, Yuvraj has lost his spark and has seen a lot of ups and downs in his career. However, he will always be one of the best cricketers that India has ever produced. He has not had a very illustrious IPL career but has always found a spot for himself in teams and in auctions, mainly because of his legendary status.
In some way, people have always hoped to see him replicate his 6 sixes. This year, he was bought by Mumbai Indians in the last moment for his base price, and this may as well prove to be his last season.
3. Lasith Malinga- Mumbai Indians

Malinga has had a crazy couple of years, in which he was dropped both from his home team of Sri Lanka and from the Mumbai Indians, owing to his continuous injuries. MI did hold on to him as a bowling coach though. However, he was recently picked up for Sri Lanka yet again, and Mumbai Indians bought him for his base price yet again in the IPL 2019 audition.
Malinga is the highest wicket-taker in the history of the IPL and is a legend in the tournament. However, he is 35 and might be playing the last IPL.
2. Chris Gayle- Kings XI Punjab
Chris Gayle has not been in the best of forms recently, and it has unfortunately become very clear. The West Indian has been a part of a number of T20 tournaments worldwide, but judging by his form in the current Bangladesh Premier League, he seems to have lost his magic touch. Even his appearances for his own country seem to have dwindled down by a long shot. His last major international tournament could be the 2019 World Cup, and with it, he could also sign off from the IPL.
Gayle has been the highest all-time run-getter in T20 matches, with above 4000 runs in his IPL career and an amazing strike rate of 150 in 112 matches.
1. MS Dhoni – Chennai Super Kings
The Indian legend may have come back to his top form just ahead of the 2019 World Cup, making Indian fans worldwide very happy. He lost his mojo quite a while back, however, he made a triumphant return in IPL 2018. However, 2019 could be the last year for Dhoni, for quite a few reasons. Age is not going to be on his side anymore, and he is also not expected to play in the ICC World T20. However, no one wants to see him go, and fans still hope that he will continue for just a few more years.
