The IPL 2019 will begin on 23rd March, with defending champions Chennai Super Kings taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore.

This year, multiple eyes will hope for RCB to take the trophy for the first time, under the very capable Virat Kohli. Furthermore, each team will play a minimum of four matches in the first two weeks, two at home and two away. The fortnight will be very important in determining the capabilities of each team and will play a huge role in ensuring who wins and who leaves. An opening partnership is crucial in determining this aspect. Here’s taking a look at the opening partnership in each team for IPL 2019.

8. Rajasthan Royals: Jos Buttler and Ajinkya Rahane

During the second half of 2018, Buttler was promoted to open, and this was the best decision made by the Royals. There is no doubt they will continue with him this year, however, they struggled to find a suitable partner alongside him. For this reason, they may seek the support of Rahane, who has played 98 games as an opener and has scored the majority of his runs in that position.

7. Sunrisers Hyderabad: David Warner and Jonny Bairstow

SRH suffered in the last season without Warner, and they are more than happy that he has returned. The super reliable and formidable opener has won quite a few matches for the team, having scored over 3400 runs, and will likely be continuing his position this year. The perfect partner for him will be English wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, who has been in great form in T20 recently.

Rahul scored over 650 runs last year as an opener for KXIP. Furthermore, he was phenomenal in the recently concluded T20I series against Australia. Chris Gayle perfectly complements his aggression and hitting style. He was not great in the last season of the IPL but has made quite a comeback in the series against England.

Shikhar Dhawan can be a beacon of light for the mostly young team of DC, showing them exactly how to hit the high shots. He has a lot of experience opening in both the IPL as well as in international cricket. Shaw could be the other opener for the team, and the youngster can be given all the liberty to express himself before players like Iyer and Pant anchor the innings.

4. Kolkata Knight Riders: Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine

A few seasons ago, KKR experimented with Narine as an opener, and it proved to be one of the best decisions of the tournament. He is the reason KKR is always off to a brilliant start. Another master hitter in KKR, Chris Lynn, will most likely be his opening partner. The pairing has a novel of fantastic successes, and KKR will hope to relive their magic in IPL 2019.

3. Royal Challenger Bangalore: Parthiv Patel and Virat Kohli

Patel will very likely be the replacement for the previous opener Chris Gayle, owing to his experience in the IPL. He has been quite successful in his ventures with Chennai and Mumbai. However, the other opener is a bone for contention in the team. But Virat Kohli will be the most likely candidate, being the topmost player in the team, and the only one likely to score a substantial amount of runs.

The team’s decision of starting off with Suryakumar Yadav last year was surprisingly a good decision, with the batsman scoring over 500 runs for them. They are likely to continue with him in IPL 2019 as well. Rohit Sharma has said that he will open the innings this time, and with him achieving lots of success for Team India, one can expect the same from him in the IPL too.

1. Chennai Super Kings: Ambati Rayudu and Shane Watson

CSK has been one of the most consistent teams in the IPL, mainly due to their unbreakable opening players, including Matthew Hayden, Mike Hussey, and Brendon McCullum. Last year, Rayudu scored over 600 runs for them. Their other opener, Shane Watson, scored over 550 runs, and helped CSK chase down 178 in the finals, within 19 overs. Moreover, CSK also has Faf Du Plessis, who can easily step in as opener if needed.
