IPL Match 26: A much needed win for DD!

IPL 2018 | Match 26 | DD vs KKR: Delhi Daredevils finally scored their second win this season defeating the Kolkata Knight Riders last night. With four points in their pocket, DD is finally turning their luck around.

KKR won the toss and placed DD to bat. They made only one change in their line-up, taking Tom Curran out and bringing Mitchell Johnson in. Gautam Gambhir and Dan Christian were missing from the match last night for DD, bringing Vijay Shankar back in as well as Colin Munro.

Colin Munro and Prithvi Shaw opened to achieve DD’s best powerplay score this season of 57 for nothing. Munro had a good debut with some beautifully-played boundaries until he was taken out by Shivam Mavi. Mavi, however, made up for the loss by bowling the most expensive over this season, allowing Iyer to smack him all over the ground for 29 runs.

18-year-old Prithvi Shaw became the youngest player to score a fifty in the IPL, sharing the record with Sanju Samson of Rajasthan Royals. The talented Mumbaikar’s partnership with Shreyas Iyer brought the score up to 127. The young prodigy should not be taken lightly.

Captaining for the first time, 23-year-old Shreyas Iyer did a spectacular job and broke the jinx of losses. His score of 93-not out showed what a capable player he really is. His skill and finesse at the game threw all doubts regarding his ability out the window. He ended DD’s innings with a six for an amazing score of 219 for 4.

KKR’s bowlers had no chance of containing the opposing team who had prepped well to come back with a bang. What should have been an easy win turned out to be the opposite for the Kolkata boys?

KKR did not start off well with three back-to-back wickets of Chris Lynn, Robin Uthappa and Suni Narine – their finest batsmen. Only Narine managed to make an impact in the short time he was on the field with 26 runs off 9 balls. Rana could not work the same magic he had the last time the team was playing against DD and left early.

KKR needed 116 runs off half the innings – a challenging task they were unable to complete. Andre Russel may have been their savior but Avesh Khan and Liam Plunkett made it impossible for him to play with ease. He has bowled just six runs away from a fifty and sent home. After Russel, there wasn’t any significant game-play from KKR as they lost cheaply by 55 runs [164-9]. DD played a beautiful game last night and dominated KKR easily.

Needing seven wins out of eight, DD is one down and six more to go. The new-found confidence and leadership should bring their spirits back up to train harder and come back into the season with a bang.

The winners will be playing next against the formidable Chennai Super Kings on April 30th at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai at 20:00 IST while KKR will have to pick themselves for their game against Royal Challengers Bangalore at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore on April 29th at 20:00 IST.
