The two teams have had a completely different experience this IPL season with MI going all the way down and then coming back up and KXIP going all the way up and then coming back down. Both teams are now in a do-or-die situation as they scramble to make it to the top four before the remaining two playoff spots are taken.
KXIP started off well with five wins that established their position in the top four, even giving them the space to allow for three losses without any change in their spot. However, the last defeat pushed them off the edge as they were kicked to the fifth place. With three consecutive losses, KXIP will look to get back up on their feet and retake what they lost.
MI, on the other hand, have been thrashing the teams on top by massive margins as they make a comeback in style. Carrying the highest net run rate, all they need is a win tonight to jump all the way to fourth place to replace Rajasthan Royals. Together with a spot in top four and revenge against RR for their last defeat, MI has more than enough motive to gain a victory tonight.
Mumbai seems to have normal weather conditions today with a dew expected to turn up towards the evening, making chasing a preference. The stadium has been known to be a goldmine for the pacers so we will be seeing a lot of Andrew Tye and Ankit Rajpoot from KXIP and Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell McClenaghan from MI.
KXIP’s over-dependence on the KL Rahul–Chris Gayle duo has finally started taking a toll on the team. Rahul and Gayle are unable to find their partnership spark as the middle-order batsmen suddenly find themselves to take lead like a deer stuck in the headlights. Rahul has tried multiple times to single-handedly bring the team back to its former glory but without any support from the other batsmen, he has failed to do so on all occasions.
MI is making a rapid comeback as history repeats itself once again this IPL. Their batting lineup is perhaps the most argued with better batsmen like JP Duminy placed below those who are less-skilled. Also, with Rohit Sharma’s out-of-form performance, it has been their biggest bane this year. Their weakness in death bowling can also be exploited by the KXIP.
Both teams have an equal probability of winning with one team having more weaknesses but the same amount of spirit and reputation to make a comeback and the other having the tools but less confidence after their last few defeats.
MI will mostly stay with the same lineup as it has won them multiple matches. KXIP may bring back Mujeeb Ur Rahman after his wrist injury. If not, Marcus Stoinis will take his place again.
Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab have clashed twenty-one times in the IPL and KXIP has one win over their opponents. Wankhede Stadium has been found to be equally lucky for both teams.
Both teams really need this win to have any chance of making the playoffs and with Wankhede Stadium added into the mixture, tonight will be an assured entertaining match to watch, especially after the last two predictable matches.
