Alex Iwobi has signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal which will run till 2023.

The 22-year-old midfielder joined Arsenal at the age of 9 and has come through the Hale End Academy. Since entering into the first team in 2015, he has made 98 appearances, scoring 9 goals. Iwobi scored 3 goals in 26 league matches last season under Arsene Wenger and has now decided to continue his stay at the Emirates Stadium under current head coach Unai Emery.

It had been theorized over the summer that Iwobi might be sent away but Emery said on the pre-season tour that a new contract was going to be offered to him. Arsenal verified on Friday that the deal had been agreed.

Alex Iwobi, who is the nephew of the Nigerian legend Jay-Jay Okocha, played in all three of his country’s World Cup matches this year. The midfielder has earned 20 caps for his nation, scoring 6 goals in the process.

The Nigerian midfielder expressed his love for the Gunners and his excitement to perform under the new era on Twitter.

Iwobi follows defender Calum Chambers and midfielders Granit Xhaka & Ainsley Maitland-Niles in signing new contracts with the club this season.
