Jack Wilshere has joined West Ham United FCย on a three-year deal with the London club.

It has been an emotional summer for the former Arsenal midfielder. First, there was the exclusion from Gareth Southgate‘s World Cup squad, for which Wilshere voiced out his dissatisfaction. The England manager merely believed that there were better alternatives and the consequent performance of the team in, the World Cup, Wilshere’s absence has completely justified his choice.

Next was the meeting with Unai Emery, the new Arsenal manager. Wilshere had previously accepted reduced figures in his contract to stay at Arsenal, his childhood club where he became the player he is today, in the 17 years he spent at the club. He was told in the meeting that he would not only have to stay with a reduced salary but also a reduced playing time, which was simply unacceptable for the 26-year old.

An England international at the age of just 18, he caught the eye against Barcelona later that season. Many people believed that he has not fulfilled his enormous potential. His career was one loaded with injuries and did not give him the best chance to perform consistently year after year.ย Instead of evolving into the sort of central midfielder around whom a top team is built, Wilshere has come to decorate matches rather than regulate them. The dynamism of his past is no longer very apparent and, even for a player with his touch, that shift of pace can be significant in the Premier League.

Wilshere made 197 appearances for Arsenal and was part of the 2014 and 2015 FA Cup-winning sides. After spending the 2016-17 season on loan at Premier League side Bournemouth, he returned to his parent club and earned 38 appearances last season, proving his fitness.

The midfielder is set to fly to Switzerland to link up with new West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini‘s squad at the club’s pre-season training camp.ย “It feels good and of course my family and a few of my friends are West Ham fans so everyone’s buzzing,” Wilshere exclaimed.

Wilshere will find himself in a club expected to enjoy limited possession and there will be plenty of work to do off the ball. But Mauricio Pellegrini prefers a passing game and his experience with Bournemouth proved that he can be an asset for a team outside the top six too. However, it will be the psychological test that is ahead of Wilshere more than the physical one that he must surmount.

The Hammers are positive about the signing despite Wilshere’s injury-filled career. The club believes that he can make a significant contribution to a squad being renewed by Pellegrini. West Ham director of football Mario Husillos said: “Manuel and I identified him as a target as soon as we joined the club and we are delighted to have succeeded in securing Jack’s signature above a number of other teams.”

Arsenal’s pursuit of Sampdoria’s Lucas Torreira indicated that Wilshere was going to be replaced imminently. The Uruguayan international is four years younger and possesses a higher market value than Wilshere.
