The UEFA awards were introduced last year to recognize the season’s best player in each position at Europe’s elite club competition, the UEFA Champions League. The jury will include the coaches of the 32 teams that were part of the group stage of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League along with a group of 55 journalists that were chosen by European Sports Media (ESM) group, representing each of UEFA’s member associations. Coaches were not allowed to vote for players from their own teams. The Jury members chose their top three players in each position and the players were awarded points accordingly. The first being awarded 5, the second 3 and the third 1. The top three players with most points will make the finals. The award last year was won by Gigi Buffon who now plays for PSG.

Keylor Navas has been named the goalkeeper of the season this year. Real Madrid’s Keylor Navas picked up the award in Monaco on stage during the 2018/19 group stage draw. Keylor had a great season with Real Madrid and the 31-year-old played all but two games in their triumphant Champions League campaign. Keylor started the season with wins in the UEFA Super Cup and Spanish super cup and finished it between the sticks for Costa Rica in the World Cup in Russia. He finished with 222 points ahead of Liverpool’s Allison Becker, who had a total of 197 points and Gigi Buffon with 97 points.

“He’s a keeper that I love. He’s won three consecutive Champions League titles, earned us lots of points and ensured we win games – but above all, I’d praise him as a person.” says teammate Dani Carvajal. Keylor now looks to have another stellar season with the Los Blancos but with the arrival of Belgian International Thibaut Courtois, life will be a little difficult for Keylor to retain his starting position in the star-studded Madrid team. Will Keylor Navas be able to hold his position as the clubs number one, only time will tell but he is deservedly the best the Champions league saw last season.
