An Indian playing in the Europa League? It was just a dream they said. It was a dream, but one lad from Punjab decided to live the dream. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, the first ever Indian to play in the Europa league and only the fifth in the country to represent a European club proved that dreams can become your reality if you work for it with all your heart.

After signing for Indian giants East Bengal in the year 2009, Gurpreet made hid first senior appearance for the Blue Tigers in 2011 and it’s safe to say that ever since he has taken the art of goalkeeping in the country to another level. His commanding and vocal presence at the back has made a great impact on the team and with great leadership abilities, he remains a mainstay in the national side, having captained the side in the absence of skipper Sunil Chettri numerous times under Coach Stephen Constantine.

The Indian shot-stopper believes that his European experience was the most important part of his career and rightly so. At least in the current scenario, it is safe to say that the level of football in Europe is a lot higher than the level of football played in our country and the experience that he got by playing at the Norwegian club Stabaek FC is beyond priceless for an Indian footballer.

As he continues his journey back in India, after he ended his Stint abroad due to lack of game time, “The Wall” as he is known remains the country’s undisputed number one and has set a high standard for Goalkeeper’s around the country to replicate, pulling off extraordinary performances consistently between the sticks for both club and country showing the rest how it’s done. His sheer presence in the team exuberates confidence and it shows in the team’s overall performance, be it the National Team or his club Bengaluru FC.
The man doesn’t know when he’s beaten and this fire that burns inside, keeps him going and made him the player and the man he is today, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu- The Wall Of India.
