IPL Match 22, Post-Match Analysis: KXIP beats DD by 4 runs!2 min read

DD VS KXIP

IPL 2018 | DD vs KXIP | Match 22: Delhi Daredevils remain at the bottom of the table with their loss to Kings XI Punjab last night at their first home game.

DD won the toss and decided to bowl, putting KXIP to bat. There were as many as five changes in DD’s line-up, the significant ones being the replacements for Jason Roy and Chris Morris – Dan Christian and Liam Plunkett. Chris Gayle was out for KXIP, a disappointing revelation for the Jamaican’s fans. He was replaced by David Morris, pushing Finch to the crease with Lokesh Rahul.

Both captains could not figure out the pitch so no team was at an advantage there, but the small size of the field at Kotla would have been child’s game for Gayle.

Avesh Khan and Liam Plunkett took down KXIP like dominoes. KXIP lost Finch early on, an experiment to the line-up that didn’t go as planned. DD also managed to take KL Rahul, a massive wicket, in the fifth over. Mayank Agarwal lost his standing to Plunkett in the eighth over and left as well. Yuvraj Singh was given an opportunity to make a comeback but failed yet again. Trent Boult ended KXIP’s innings with two more wickets in the last over with his trusty yorkers.

DD did a really good job restricting KXIP to its lowest score in ten overs this season – 68 for 3. Liam Plunkett’s debut turned out to be a blessing for DD – he was all over the ground, plucking KXIP’s batsmen off the field. KXIP finished with a score of 143 for 8, pretty low for the batting pitch and the short boundaries at Kotla.

With 144 to chase, new boy Prithvi Shaw and captain Gautam Gambhir opened the innings. Prithvi had a pretty good debut but his overambitious batting got him out. It wasn’t Maxwell’s day either as he left the field early. Gambhir played safe but it didn’t save him. Ravichandran Ashwin played his assorted bag of spin and pace bowlers like a pro, taking out all the threats before they could make an impact.

Shreyas Iyer had a good knock, scoring a fifty and tried extremely hard to gain DD their much-needed victory but was bowled by Mujeeb, with five runs left to win. The seventeen-year-old won the game for KXIP.

KXIP sits on top of the table with four consecutive wins while DD stays at the bottom. They did put effort and this was not an easy win for KXIP – hopefully, DD can carry their bowling improvements to the next game.

KXIP has to prepare themselves against the bowling legends – Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 26th at Hyderabad while a very disappointed DD will have to gear up once again for their match against KKR on April 27th at another home game.
