Jamaican star Leon Bailey has penned a new long-term deal with Bayer Leverkusen which will keep him at the club until 2023.

The Kingston-born winger, Leon Bailey ignited the Bundesliga last season. The 21-year-old recorded 9 goals and 6 assists in 30 Bundesliga appearances. Averaging 29 sprints/game catching top speeds of 21mph, dribbled against his opponents in one-on-one battles an average of 19.8 times/game

After taking half a year to settle in the German league, following his move from Belgian side Genk in January 2017, Leon Bailey scored one of the best goals in the Bundesliga against Hoffenheim with a ludicrous back-heel. The Jamaican forward also got the Best Newcomer of the season 2017/2018 award recently for his performances in the Bundesliga last season.

Although Leon Bailey represented Jamaica u-23 team, the lightning-fast winger is yet to determine his senior international future. Apparently, the 21-year-old forward could be eligible for England through his adoptive family, as well as Malta and Belgium. If he stays and satisfies residency requirements of Germany, there’s also a potentiality that he can play for the German National team.

After signing the 5-year contract, Bailey said: “This contract extension is a show of appreciation for the support I’ve had and I’ve always said how happy I feel here in Leverkusen. We can achieve a lot with this young team. My goal is to repay the trust shown in me with good performances and consistent development.”

Bayer Leverkusen have now extended the contracts of young stars Leon Bailey, Julian Brandt and Kai Havertz this year as the German team builds one of the most impressive youthful squads in the Bundesliga.

Bayer Leverkusen starts their new Bundesliga campaign away to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday, 25th August.
