Manchester City beats Liverpool for the first time this season and revives everything in running the Premier League.

Liverpool FC suffered their first defeat in the Premier League on Thursday when they suffered (2-1) in the mighty hands Manchester City 2-1. In case of a victory, the Reds could have ruined the Citizens aspirations, but Guardiola’s team eventually secured all three points.

The game was very important for both teams, but it was more urgent for Manchester City, who entered the field seven points adrift of Liverpool, leader of the English Premier League. The Reds, meanwhile, wanted to leave the Etihad ten points clear at the top, a distance that would certainly be very difficult to recover for the players of Guardiola.

Without many surprises, Manchester City had more possession but it was Liverpool, around 18 minutes, were literally millimeters away from the goal. A Sadio Mane shot hit Ederson’s post, and the ball remained very close to the danger zone. Citizens central defender John Stones tried to solve the problems but hit his goalkeeper, causing the ball to jump in the direction of the goal. With immense rapidity, the City guard turned and avoided the goal, inches from the line. Moments later, goal-line technology showed that the ball did not fully enter the goal by a hairline.

At the 40th minute, an insistent move by Bernardo Silva from the left helped the ball to reach Aguero. Without any angle, but with a lot of space due to lack of pressure from Lovren, the Argentine hit hard and beat Alisson for the only space where the ball could enter.

For a possible huge lead in the league, Liverpool equalized at the 64th minute, in a play between lateral defenses and finished by the spearhead. From the right, Arnold discovered Robertson with a great pass, and the Scotsman served Robert Firmino, who scored to make it 1-1.

Just as Liverpool were thinking about going for the three points, City restored their advantage thanks to Leroy Sane. The Germany international fired the ball into the bottom corner of Alisson’s goal, making this the first time Liverpool have conceded more than once in a Premier League game this season.

Liverpool tried well, even with several long balls in the final minutes, but failed to reach any positive result. They showed the urgency which had been lacking from their performance, but their balls into the box were easily defended by City. The champions held on to swing the title race momentum in their favor with a deserved victory.

The winner: Pep Guardiola

Champion of England title on the line. So Manchester City had no other choice but to win to keep their ambition going. It was also a vital test for the coach, Pep Guardiola. With these three points so precious, the Spanish coach was first not to plunge into many doubts while his team had been beaten twice consecutively during his last three outings at the end of December by Crystal Palace (2 -3) and Leicester (1-2). Then, for this first match in 2019, Guardiola was also able to send a message to his counterpart Jurgen Klopp in a head-to-head between two of the most highly rated technicians of the moment. With his organization rarely disturbed, a dry pressing all time, and decisive individualities, the former coach of Barca won his duel against Klopp, who never knew how to turn the tide even if the entry of Fabinho had influence in the game.

The loser: Sadio Mane

In the magic trio of Firmino-Salah-Mane, the last name is the one who disappoints the least, the one who never completely misses his objective. At Etihad Stadium, the Senegalese was not catastrophic, but he was not as lethal as expected. There is of course that could have changed everything in the 18th minute, his only opportunity in the match. Other than that, offensively, it was difficult to find the former player of FC Metz, well blocked by the Citizens. Another factor that did not help him, he was not properly concerned about his doings. For example, for his inadequate retreat during Sane’s decisive goal, Alexander-Arnold was far too lonely in the bunch of Man City footballers.
