With the help of a great season in Alaves, Marcos Llorente made his much-awaited return to Real Madrid in the summer of 2017. He was projected as the relay and a direct competitor of Casemiro in the holding midfielder position. But more than a year later, after being ignored by Zidane, Lopetegui, and Solari, the 23-year-old may ask the club for an exit in the winter market.
It doesn’t appear as though Marcos Llorente’s future is with Real Madrid and the midfielder is enduring his second season with the first team without enjoying many minutes. Despite Santiago Solari’s side suffering from injuries this season, Llorente has just 11 minutes under his belt, except the Roma duel.
Marcos Llorente has been considering his projection in the club for months from a neutral position. His progressive devaluation since his arrival confirms that right now he is a declining player and whose career is in danger of stagnation. The player understands that his current situation is practically unsustainable and, in addition, it is irreversible. Llorente has no hope that his role in Madrid will take some prominence. He believes that if he is not the ‘call’ in the time of need, there is no reason to think that Santiago Solari will give importance from here to the end of the season.
Now, the argument that he can use to request the Real leaders to accept his request to leave the club is the one he has been following since he was notified in 2017 that he would be a part of the first team. Llorente has always followed the same idea, his desire is to play. He said that upon his arrival, he repeated it in the window of January of the last course, and insisted again this summer when he had in mind to leave Madrid. His departure was put on hold by Julen Lopetegui, who assured him that he was counting on him.
The final decision on the future of Llorente is in the hands of Real Madrid. The midfielder is aware that his departure, possibly in the form of transfer, will only occur if the hierarchy gives the green light. It will not be, in any case, a matter of offers. This summer and the previous one, Llorente received proposals from different clubs, from Spain and abroad, to leave the Bernabeu.
On the part of the club, there are not many reasons to retain a player who appeared as the second fiddle with few minutes in 2018 (636), just above Jesus Vallejo (465). With Zidane, his first coach in Madrid, the relationship was practically non-existent. There was no good feeling between them since they coincided in Castilla and under the French boss, his role was secondary, played 1,063 minutes (501 of them in Cup) spread over 20 games.
Lopetegui, despite the message that moved Llorente last summer, curtailed his match time. Llorente only played 11 minutes in the 14 games. As for Solari, he only gave him a ‘short touch’ in Copa. He played the full game in Melilla, but he was left out of the squads against Valladolid, Viktoria Plzen, Celta and Eibar. For Tuesday’s game in Rome, the midfielder entered the first team after a long span and displayed his worth as Real won 2-0.
Intended to be a pivotal midfielder of the squad, but before the interest of the white club in hiring another midfielder, Marcos Llorente sees only one possible solution to resume his progression as a footballer and end the ostracism he has lived in the last year and a half. The Spanish footballer wants to leave Madrid for the sake of his own career.
