Real Madrid have completed the signing of Dominican striker Mariano Diaz from Lyon for a fee around £33 million on a 5-year contract, a year after selling him for £7.2 million.

A statement from the club’s official website read: “Real Madrid C. F. and Olympique Lyonnais have agreed a deal for the player Mariano, who will be with the Whites for the next five seasons. The player will be presented on Thursday 31st August, at 1:30 pm CEST in the Santiago Bernabéu presidential box. Mariano will then take to the Santiago Bernabéu pitch wearing the Real Madrid C. F. kit. He will then speak to the press in the press room.”

Mariano Diaz returns to Real Madrid after producing his most prolific spell at Olympique Lyon where he scored 18 goals in 34 appearances in Ligue 1 last season. The 25-year-old striker understands the philosophy and system of Real Madrid perfectly as he spent his career from 2011 to 2017 at the club.

Mariano Diaz began his career at Espanyol and later moved to Real Madrid in 2011. After progressing through the u-19 and Real Madrid C squads, he advanced to Castilla in 2014. Just a year later, he became the top scorer in the Segunda División B, scoring 27 goals with the youth team.

In the 2016/17 season, Diaz finally became part of the first team, winning the UEFA Champions League, La Liga, Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. The forward made his debut in a 2-1 win over Celta and scored his first goal against Cultural Leonesa. In that season, Mariano Diaz scored 5 goals for the first team. In the summer of 2017, he joined French side Lyon and became a key player for the club.

A pacy & powerful striker with an eye for goal, Diaz will hope he can continue his lethal form in front of goal for Los Blancos.

Real Madrid faces Leganes in their next La Liga fixture on Sunday, 2nd September.
