MS Dhoni single-handedly tried to win Chennai Super Kings in the game against Kings XI Punjab, on Sunday, in Mohali. One of his best IPL performances, he gave his team a fighting chance, even with a back injury. Dhoni scored 79 – not out off 44 balls, allowing CSK fans to hope that they might just win this game but his back brought him down.
Dhoni stepped up with a spectacular five sixes and six fours, making up for his colleagues’ weak performance that night. He received medical attention during the game for the injury. He was quite visibly in pain but continued to give his all, earning respect from fans and several cricketers, who took to Twitter to applaud his diligence.
CSK’s chase after Punjab’s total of 197 started off with Shane Watson and Murali Vijay’s wickets, who scored 11 and 12 each. Ambati Rayudu entered to build a base with 49 runs from 35 balls. Dhoni joined him in the seventh over after Sam Billings was bowled out by Ashwin.
Dhoni procured his back injury while taking a quick double for which he required physio. He managed to get back up with a back rub but was left to fend for the team himself, with Rayudu’s wicket. Jadeja came in but could barely save himself, let alone the team, from Punjab’s bowlers.
CSK seemed to have no chance with their run rate but Dhoni took his vengeance, shocking the opposing team and stadium alike.
With 17 runs needed off the twentieth over, Mohit Sharma bowled wide Yorkers, taking the advantage of Dhoni’s inability to stretch.
Dhoni ended the game with a six that came a little later than required as CSK lost to KXIP by a narrow four runs.
