AS Roma have completed the signing of World Cup-winning midfielder Steven Nzonzi from Sevilla.

Steven Nzonzi joins the Italian side for an initial fee of €26.65 million with performance-related clauses that could be worth up to an additional €4 million making it a possible €30 million deal.

The France international has agreed to a 4-year contract with the club that runs until 2022. Nzonzi will wear the No. 42 shirt for the upcoming season.

This move to Roma unites him once again with Monchi, the sporting director who initially brought him to Sevilla.

Speaking about Nzonzi, Monchi said: “Steven [Nzonzi] is a footballer with a mix of physical and technical qualities that we think will really add to the players that we already have here at AS Roma. With his arrival, we have even more quality and competition in midfield.”

Steven Nzonzi began his professional career in France with Amiens before spending the most of his developmental footballing years in England with Premier League side Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City afterwards. At Stoke, he established himself as a crucial pivotal part of the squad under Tony Pulis and then under Mark Hughes, where his exceptional performances earned him the Stoke Player of the Year award in the 2014-15 season.

Nzonzi then moved to La Liga side Sevilla in the summer of 2015 and won the UEFA Europa League in his first season. The midfielder has spent the last three years at the Spanish side, becoming a steady presence in the heart of midfield consequently earning him international recognition for the first time in his career.

The 29-year-old was an important part of the France team that won the World Cup in Russia this year. Nzonzi participated in 5 games in the tournament. In total, he has earned 9 caps for his country.

Speaking about his move, Nznonzi said: “I’m very happy to be here and to be an AS Roma player. I really felt that the club wanted me to come. I will give my best on the pitch, and hopefully be a very good player for this team.”

Roma face Torino in their first Serie A fixture of the season on Sunday, 19th August.
