The Mzansi Super League 2018 started on November 16 in Newlands with Cape Town Blitz taking on Tshwane Spartans.

The Mzansi Super League 2018 is the inaugural edition of the Twenty20 South African Super League.

It was long anticipated and the launch was way too late. But the first players draft took place in October this year. Big names like AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, Dale Steyn are a part of the setup. JP Duminy will be a part of the commentary team.

The captains of the six teams participating in the Mzansi Super League are familiar names. There are other big names in the mix, besides the South African players. Chris Gayle, Eoin Morgan, Jason Roy, Rashid Khan, and Sean Williams, to name a few. Estranged players Rilee Rossouw and Kyle Abbott will also be featuring in the Mzansi Super League.

Players to look out for:

Cape Town Blitz

Captain: Farhaan Behardien

Key Players: Quinton de Kock, Dale Steyn
Promising Player: Jason Smith. An all-rounder, who is in form with the bat, if gets enough chances or at least a few can shine.

Nelson Mandela Bay Giants

Captain: Jon-Jon Smuts

Key Players: Jason Roy, Imran Tahir, Chris Morris

Promising Players: Marco Marais. Know for his breezy and confident stroke play, he played brilliantly in the Africa T20 cup and is fit for the Twenty20 format. Much like New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum, he opens the batting and slogs from the very first delivery of his innings. Although a bit of a wild card, he’s deemed to be producing some big innings.

Paarl Rocks

Captain: Faf du Plessis

Key Players: Aiden Markram, Dwayne Bravo.

Promising player – Bjorn Fortuin. He was a part of the 2015 Africa T20 Cup. He was also named in Durban Qalandars’ squad for the first season of the T20 Global League last year. A bit on the lesser known side but can be promising with both the bat as well as a handy spinning option.

Durban Heat

Captain: Albie Morkel

Key Players: David Miller, Hashim Amla, Rashid Khan.

Promising player: Sarel Erwee. A handy left-handed batsman who started his list A career 10 years back was also a part of the South Africa T20 Cup of  2015 and 2018. He was also a part of the winning South African team in the Hong Kong Sixes tournament 2017.

Jozi Stars

Captain: Dane Vilas

Key Players: Kagiso Rabada, Chris Gayle

Promising player: Eddie Leie. Not so obscure a name, Leie could just become a more familiar name with this exposure. He has played for South Africa A team and also been a part of the T20 International team in a couple of matches.

Tshwane Spartans

Captain: AB de Villiers

Key Players: Dale Steyn, Sikandar Raza, Eoin Morgan

Promising players: Robbie Frylinck and Tony de Zorzi. Frylinck is an experienced player who still gets wickets and can slog down the order. Tony de Zorzi was the captain of the U19 team named in 2016.
