Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp and Virgil van Dijk have been named as the Premier League’s Manager and Player of the Month for December, while Andros Townsend of Crystal Palace claimed the Goal of the month award.
These two were rewarded for their contribution to Liverpool’s cause in the last month of 2018. Van Dijk saw off competition from team-mate Mohamed Salah as well as Felipe Anderson, Eden Hazard, and Harry Kane, while Klopp came out on top beating Nuno Espirto Santo, Mauricio Pochettino, and Maurizio Sarri.
Player of the month: Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been named Premier League Player of the Month for December, in doing so becoming the first defender to win this award since Tottenham Hotspur center half Jan Vertonghen won it in 2013. Van Dijk had a staggering December for Liverpool, securing their place at the top of the Premier League with seven wins out of seven games, with four clean sheets, two assists and a goal against the Wolves.
“I didn’t know that but I’m very proud to win this,” he told the Premier League after receiving the trophy at Liverpool’s Melwood training base.
“All credit to everyone that helped me win it and the fans who have been supporting me. December was a great month and hopefully, we can keep going.
“It was a fantastic month for all of us, there were some great games. I enjoyed every bit of it. The Arsenal game was a great game to play in – it was obviously a fantastic win.”

Manager of the month: Jurgen Klopp (Liverpool)
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp won the Premier League Manager of the Month award for December.
The German coach received the award on Friday having led his side to victory in all seven of their top-flight matches throughout the last month. The Anfield-based side scored 22 times and conceded just three during those games, with that impressive record leading Klopp to describe December as ‘special’. Klopp was first named manager of the month in September 2016.“It’s nice, the icing on the cake,” he said, upon being presented with the prize.
“It was a very successful but difficult month. Each game felt like the most important one of the season. It was unbelievable. The intensity was massive but that’s what made it a special month.”
Goal of the month: Andros Townsend (Crystal Palace)
Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend won the Premier League Goal of the Month award for December, following his sublime volleyed effort against Manchester City at the Etihad. Townsend scored in what was one of the highlights of the season, as Palace battled against the reigning champions in their own arena and secured a 3-2 victory. Townsend’s goal was the jewel on the crown, catching the ball in the sweetest way possible on the volley from around 35-yards out.“We got a free-kick and the ball’s dropped out of the air. I just thought, ‘Yeah, it’s sat up perfectly, I’m going to hit this’,” the player Premier League upon receiving his prize.
“I didn’t really know how good a goal it was. Everyone was saying, ‘It was incredible, it was the best goal I’ve ever seen.’ I just thought it was a volley from outside the box and it’s not until I watched it back, then I thought, ‘Oh wow, maybe that is a bit special’.”
