Premier League Highlights 2018/19: Liverpool remains unbeaten with their main man Mohamed Salah back in the scoring charts.

Even by Klopp’s standards, the German was an animated presence by the touchline yesterday as Liverpool show immense character to get the three points with a hard fought win against an inspired Huddersfield side that are yet to score a goal at home this season. The only goal that won them the game was netted by their main man Mohamed Salah, who was struggling to find his form this Premier League Season. This win marked the 200th win away from home in the Premier League

When Klopp said last season that he wanted his players to get hard-fought wins under their belt, he certainly didn’t expect his team to fulfill his expectation so very diligently. While some players were nowhere close to their best, some others turned up and notched up a solid individual performance. However, as a unit, the Reds didn’t turn up in an attacking sense against a team that have previously conceded 17 goals in 8 games so far in the season. This is certainly not a new concern this season and with the front three not starting together, there was little chance that it would go this way.

Liverpool then are having to win in a different way, one that has not been seen during Klopp’s time at the Merseyside club. The games are often nervous and tight affairs and chances are at a premium. But one of the major boosts has certainly been the character that this Liverpool team have shown. However, this new Liverpool team is going to take some time getting used to.

Virgil Van Dijk – The Ministry of Defence for Liverpool.

Although the reds attack has prompted many questions, it is their defence that has had almost all the answers. After recording their 6th Premier League clean sheet this season, it means that Liverpool have conceded only three goals thus far this season – The fewest they have shipped during the same number of games ever in their history. Given the solid defences that have been the bedrock of so many Liverpool title triumphs, this is truly a remarkable achievement.

Alisson has made a big difference, and so has the emergence of Joe Gomez but the real game changer has been the addition of Virgil Van Dijk, who finished the game as the captain of this Liverpool team. His leadership skills and cruise control from the heart of the defence makes him a true talisman of this Liverpool defence that looks in top-notch form this season.

Trademark Lallana return for Liverpool.

Adam Lallana returned to action for the first time in the last 18 months. This was his first Liverpool start since new year’s day and this hence was a big game for the Englishman, especially with Gareth Southgate watching from the stands. He played on the left of the attacking three with Shaqiri playing in the attacking midfield role. It took him 18 minutes to bring out the Cruyff turn from his box of tricks and he went on with business as he so often used to. Although he didn’t look too good and he faded away after the interval, he showed enough to conclude that he would have a role to play in this Liverpool team not necessarily in the position he played yesterday.

Shaqiri’s creativity and a classy finish by Salah proved to be the winner, but an overall messy performance by the Reds. Sturridge will have wanted a little bit more from his Premier League start, while Fabinho showed great promise in his league debut in a second-half cameo. Liverpool are now placed second on the table, tied on points with Manchester City but the Reds will know that their main front three, Mane, Salah & Firmino will have to come to the party if they are to continue challenging City to the Premier League Title.
