Real Madrid maintained their unbeaten start to the La Liga season with a 4 – 1 victory over Leganes at the Bernabeu on Sunday.

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made his Real Madrid debut while Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale continued their excellent goalscoring form since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.

Gareth Bale scored in his third consecutive game to give the hosts the lead in the 17th minute but Leganes equalized with a penalty as debutant Thibaut Courtois failed to stop Guido Carillo from scoring in the 24th minute.

Benzema headed a goal shortly after the interval in the 48th minute. This goal was only given after the referee consulted the video assistant referee (VAR) to check if the French striker had committed a foul. Benzema then secured his fourth goal in two league games in the 61st minute from an extraordinary pass using a backheel by newly-crowned UEFA Midfielder of the Season & Player of the Year, Luka Modric.

The Frenchman had the chance to complete a hat-trick when Madrid were given a penalty after an energetic winger Marco Asensio was felled by Unai Bustinza, however, captain Sergio Ramos took charge for the spot-kick and scored a goal for the second game in a row from the spot.

Real boss Julen Lopetegui said: “We are getting to know each other better, we are training more and we have managed to get the team playing like a true team. They understand what is being asked of them and they have the ability to make it happen.”

Julen Lopetegui‘s side are at the top of their table with 9 points and are the only team to win their opening three La Liga games, although current champions Barcelona can match that excellent start if they manage to win against La Liga debutants Huesca on Sunday.

Real Madrid faces Athletic Bilbao next Sunday, 16th September after the international break.
