Real Madrid have signed Alvaro Odriozola from Real Sociedad. Having impressed enough to convince Julen Lopetegui to take him to the World Cup, the right-back will now accompany the ex-Spain coach to the Santiago Bernabeu.

The 22-year old has acquired excellent reviews for his performances with Sociedad, in La Liga. Real Madrid have reinforced their ranks with one of the continent’s most talented young prospects. However, another young fullback, Theo Hernandez, who transferred to Real Madrid a year ago, did not have the best of seasons and was largely insignificant.
The youngster will also sign a contract until June 2024 at the Santiago Bernabeu once he has passed his medical examinations.“Real Madrid and Real Sociedad have agreed to the transfer of the player Alvaro Odriozola, pending the medical examination, and the player remains linked to the club for the next six seasons,” the Merengue confirmed via a statement released on the club’s official website.

A fullback identified by his lung-busting runs down the flanks, he was at the World Cup in Russia with the Spanish national team, and his pace and ability to overlap are some of his notable assets. In the 2017/18 campaign, Odriozola made 35 appearances for Real Sociedad in the La Liga, contributing 4 assists and registering more crosses into the box than any other player in the team. He will arrive as an understudy to fellow Spanish teammate Dani Carvajal, which could see young Achraf Hakimi go out on loan.
His form on both sides of defence even led to a surprise World Cup call-up from former La Roja coach Julen Lopetegui, although successor Fernando Hierro declined to give him a single minute on the field as Spain dropped out in the last 16.
BTW, the spine of the U21 team (minus Saul) that was so good — Marcos, Ceballos, Vallejo, Asensio, Odriozola — is now in our squad.

Julen Lopetegui has now made Odriozola his first major signing at Madrid, in a deal estimated to be worth around £36 million, the full value of his release clause. This signing could be the first of many for Los Blancos.
