IPL 2018 | RR vs MI | Match 22: Mumbai Indians clashed with the Rajasthan Royals at Sawai Mann Singh Stadium, Jaipur last night to be defeated by 3 wickets.

Winning the toss, Mumbai went against the trend and opted to Bat. Mumbai stuck to the same line-up played in the last match and Rajasthan had two changes – they gained back the services of Jofra Archer, who was out of the team with an injury and Dhawal Kulkarni earned his place back at the expense of Stuart Binny.

Archer replaced Ben Laughlin. It was a welcome addition to the struggling RR squad and his performance demanded a great welcome back. Jofra Archer with his variations can be an asset to any team across the world. He was named ‘Man of the Match’.

Mumbai lost Evin Lewis very cheaply in the first over and Ishan Kishan found it very difficult to initially gain a grip. However, partnered with Yadav, they stitched 129 runs partnership for the second wicket. Both finished their half centuries and made up for their duck-outs in the previous match.

When Yadav and Ishan were on the crease, MI seemed to be able to score above 200 but once Ishan Kishan lost his wicket for 130-2, MI lost another two quick wickets of Yadav and Rohit Sharma. Captain Rohit Sharma faced his first golden duck in the IPL – not a good day for the Mumbai Indians.

RR came back strongly at the end and pulled back to restrict MI to 167 for 7 in 20 overs. It was a great come-back from RR considering their struggle with the ball this season. Jofra Archer made the difference, picking up 3 important wickets with his yorkers and giving away just 22 runs in his four overs.

Chasing 168, which was a par score on this track, RR lost their new opening batsman, Rahul Tripathi, very cheaply and even lost captain Ajinkya Rahane within Powerplay. It was not a game for the captains.

Sanju Samson built a good partnership with the struggling Ben Stokes to keep the game on track. They had a 72 runs partnership for the third wicket and with both of them on the crease, things looked easy for RR. Just when Stokes was catching up with Samson, he was bowled out by Hardik Pandya. Samson scored his half-century and left the field soon after.

MI made a great come-back picking up Stokes in the fifteenth over. Jasprit Bumrah bowled the dream seventeenth over, giving just one run and picking up two important wickets – Samson and Buttler.

As RR lost all their main batsman in quick succession, it seemed to be all over for RR. Needing 45 from 17 balls, it didn’t appear to be a doable task but K Gowtham played the innings of his life to win the match for RR. Bumrah went for 18 runs in his last over and it was the turning point in the match. Gowtham ended the game with a beautiful six, turning RR’s luck around in three overs.

RR have a week to play next against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 29th at the same location while MI will need to recover quickly for their game against the same on April 24th at home base.
