Russia’s dominatable performance

The hosts’ wasted no time in carrying where they left after the opening match, thrashing Egypt 3-1 at New Zenit Stadium. After back to back victory, and commanding goal difference Sbornaya has virtually booked their place for the knock-out stage. Russia has proven themselves a challenging opponent to any team they face. With a goal difference of 7 in their two matches, it would be difficult for any strong side to break away their fine winning form. The midfielder, Denis Cheryshev has played an inevitable part in Russia’ fine form, scoring three stunning goals of the total eight. He moved up to joint top goal scorer, alongside five-time Ballon d’or winner Cristiano Ronaldo. In fact, the whole midfield has played an important role in sharing 5 goals and 3 assists.

Too much dependency on Salah

Premier League top goal scorer, Mohammed Salah started in the playing eleven for the first time after the injury in the Champions League final. This could not stop him from scoring but the goal came too late. Egypt was awarded a free kick right on the edge of the box in the 72nd minute but VAR overrides the on-field referee’s decision to the spot kick, as the foul was committed inside the area. The Liverpool man finds no difficulty in sending the ball past Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev. Egypt seems to struggle as they were able to find only one shot on target in the complete match. Even though Salah was declared 100 percent fit for the match seems struggling with the injury. Egyptian defender, Ahmed Fathi opened the floodgates with an own goal just two minutes after the break. Russia havoc after the breakthrough and scored two more within a time span of 15 minutes. Twelve minutes after, Denis Cheryshev made no mistake in guiding the ball past El Shenawi after a fine cut-back from Mario Fernandes. Artem Dzyuba triples the lead after three minutes, ensuring a victory for the hosts’ in the 62nd minute.

What’s next….?

Russia will face Uruguay (La Celeste) in their final match of Group A and certainly aim to continue their winning streak.

On the other hand, it was not a world cup Egyptians and Salah are hoping for. Nevertheless, the Pharaohs will want to end the World Cup campaign on a positive note, by winning their first ever World Cup win.
