Sunil Chhetri, Captain, Leader, Legend Breaks another record1 min read

“We’ve got Chhetri, Sunil Chhetri I Just don’t think you understand! Oh, When he scores we go F***ing Mad! We’ve got Sunil Chhetri!”

For those of you who have been fortunate enough to hear this chant Live, sitting in Bengaluru FC’s famous West Block will know what I’m talking about. I can feel the hair on my arms stand while writing about this wonderful man, Sunil Chhetri Bengaluru FC, and India’s Talismanic captain has broken another record!

The 33-year-old like fine Wine seems to get better and better with age, the 2017/18 Season has been his best in terms of goals, scoring 22 times in all competitions in 30 appearances. The poster boy of Indian Football is also making his 100th appearance for India in their second Intercontinental Cup game against Kenya, Chhetri has got the attention of the Indian sporting community with a video that has been talked about everywhere. ( Check the video here and check out An appeal to Football fans in India

Not only is it Chhetri’s 100th Appearance for India he is 3rd on the list of Highest number of goals scored by Active players for their country, Chhetri is at third place with Legendary Spanish Striker David Villa both have scored 59 goals in the same amount of games incidentally, Villa hasn’t announced his retirement from International Football and was even a part of Spain’s 2018 World Cup Qualifying squad in 2017. The only 2 players above Chhetri are Lionel Messi at 64 and Cristiano Ronaldo at 81, considering Chhetri has at least two games left in the Intercontinental cup, three if India makes the final the race between Messi and Chhetri could be close.

Chhetri has played such a pivotal role in the Rise of Indian Football, from being ranked at 173 in March 2015 to a present-day ranking of 97 the improvement has been immense. Sure we have a long way to go but nevertheless, the progress should be appreciated, like on one of the banners made by the Blue pilgrims and West Block Blues “The road is long, but the belief is everything Stand up for Indian Football”.
