Tottenham Hotspur 0 – 1 Manchester City | A goal and an emotional night for Mahrez

Tottenham Hotspur 0 - 1 Manchester City | A goal and an emotional night for Mahrez

Premier League Highlights: Manchester City beat Spurs 1 – 0 as former Leicester man Riyad Mahrez dedicated his winner to recently deceased Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha

Mahrez‘s early close-range goal gave Manchester City hard-fought victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley to send them back to the top of the Premier League whilst keeping Spurs at fifth place.

Most of the pre-match discussions were about the state of the Wembley turf after the NFL fixture on Sunday. The stadium witnessed a period of silence when Last Post is played in tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in armed conflict as well as the unfortunate events that ensued in Leicester and the match kicked off shortly after.

Ederson‘s long ball created difficulties for Trippier, who failed to deal with the goalkeeper’s long punt, let Raheem Sterling ease into the box and find Mahrez who taps the ball into the net. The former Leicester player lifted his hands to the sky in celebration and pointed upwards emotionally, ultimately dedicating the goal to the Leicester Owner and Chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha following his tragic death just a few days ago.

Harry Kane almost finds the equaliser almost instantly but his powerful shot flies just over the bar. Toby Alderweireld flicks an unmarked header straight at Ederson a minute later. At the other end, Mahrez’s attempt from a tight angle was pushed onto the post by Hugo Lloris.

David Silva missed a great chance to give City a two-goal cushion after the break, Bernardo Silva finds David Silva inside the 6-yard box and the Spanish midfielder strangely decides to take a touch and pass the ball, instead of tapping it in, to Sterling who fails to find the net from a tighter angle. Spurs withstood that attack and Pep Guardiola seemed extremely furious in the dugout. Sergio Aguero should have made it 2-0 as he curled a feeble effort at Lloris from 10 yards in space.

Tottenham were somehow still in the game with 10 minutes remaining but missed a great opportunity to level the score as Erik Lamela fired a shot over the bar from just 10 yards out with just Ederson to beat.

This result keeps City at the top of the table as they remain unbeaten in the league with 26 points out of a potential 30, while Tottenham stand five points behind in fifth place.

Manchester City host Fulham in the Premier League on Friday, 2nd November while Tottenham travel to West Ham in the Carabao Cup tie on Thursday, 1st November.

Manchester City 5 – 0 Burnley FC | Kevin De Bruyne returns at Etihad

Manchester City 5 - 0 Burnley FC | Kevin De Bruyne returns at Etihad

Premier League 2018/19 Highlights: Manchester City demolish Burnley FC at Etihad and De Bruyne returns from injury.

2017/18 Premier League Champions Manchester City looked as good as ever as they completely dismantled a Burnley FC side as they beat them 5 – 0. This is a side that has seen their form improved over the last two games. Raheem Sterling was given rest after he rediscovered his form with England and as it seemed City did not need him at all. With Pep Guardiola sending on the returning Kevin De Bruyne and also Phil Foden for cameos in the second half, everybody was happy in the Manchester City camp. The only possible complaint could be that Manchester City could have won by a much bigger margin. That was the extent of control that Manchester City had on the game. Although Mahrez and Sane added two late goals, Manchester city looked really good and the scary part for the opponents was that they could have gone on and got some more.

Sergio Aguero went into the game having scored six goals in six games against the Clarets and it only took him 17 minutes to make it seven in seven. Manchester City made most of the headway in attack through the left flank where the trickery of Silva, the pace of Sane and a certain Benjamin Mendy breached the Burnley backline with ease.

Pep has often complained that his side does not capitalize when they are on top and seemed furious at the end of the first half after Joe Hart saved a Silva header and Aguero missed an open goal from the rebound. The most promising Burnley ever looked throughout the game was in the first minute due to a Laporte error. Kompany, however, saw out the problem with a dangerously high tackle on Lennon that saw him go into the books early on and was probably lucky to stay on.

The second half started with two quick goals that came in the form of Bernardo Silva and Fernandinho and confident that the game was safe, Pep sent on the returning Kevin De Bruyne for the last half an hour. This probably looked cruel to the Burnley fans and the team, although it was young Foden who impressed as he came on later during the game.  The youngster combined well with De Bruyne in the build-up play that led to Mahrez’s goal and had a big influence on the game. And as Sane added a late fifth from a Mendy cross, Hart was seen kicking the goalpost in frustration, although if anyone knew both these clubs well, it shouldn’t have been that much of a surprise.

Hoffenheim 1 – 2 Manchester City | UEFA Champions League Highlights

Hoffenheim 1 - 2 Manchester City | UEFA Champions League Highlights

Manchester City seized the first win of their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 1-2 victory over Hoffenheim in Group F.

The thrilling match was covered by goals at both ends, with Ishak Belfodil scoring the opening goal inside a minute before Sergio Aguero equalized just a few minutes later, however, the final goal came in the dying minutes as David Silva grabbed the winner for Manchester City.

Hoffenheim went ahead just 44 seconds after kicking off their inaugural home UEFA Champions League fixture. Kerem Demirbay slotted the ball through for Ishak Belfodil to latch onto and slot home past Ederson to send the home fans into a frenzy.

However, their passion was subdued just seven minutes later as Sergio Aguero made things level. A majestic ball from David Silva to find Leroy Sane who cut the ball back for Aguero. The Argentinean striker then found space before firing home from inside the 6-yard box.

Manchester City were immediately on the prowl for a second goal and could have taken the lead in the 16th minute through Raheem Sterling. They burst down the field with pace as England forward got himself into the box only for the ball to come off his heel before going wide.

Oliver Baumann made a magnificent save of a curling effort from Aguero at the top left corner in the 35th minute. Four minutes later,  Ederson came to the rescue at the other end as Aymeric Laporte played a poor back pass that allowed Belfodil onto the ball, but the Manchester City stopper made himself big at the near post to deny the effort.

The second half of the game was slower and with fewer opportunities than the first. Manchester City were robbed of a penalty in the 74th minute. Baumann came rushing off his line and took down Sane in the box. The keeper was nowhere near the ball but the referee did not point to the spot.

However, the Citizens were not going home without a win, David Silva slotting home the winner after Stefan Posch failed to deal with a Bernardo Silva cross in the 87th minute.

Manchester City move up to the second place in Group F ahead of Shakhtar Donetsk and Hoffenheim.

Manchester City face a massive challenge in the Premier League against Liverpool on Sunday, 7th October before taking on Shakhtar Donetsk in their next UEFA Champions League fixture on 24th October.

Arsenal VS Manchester City, Kick-Off: 12th August, 08:30 PM (IST)

The opening weekend of the Premier League has launched up a very appealing match as Arsenal take on Manchester City at the Emirates on Sunday. City open their title defence against Unai Emery‘s Arsenal – who are headed towards the latest season by a new manager for the first time in 22 years.

The post-Arsene Wenger period begins at the Emirates as Unai Emery takes charge of his first Premier League match and he could barely have been given a tougher start at home to the champions of the last season. Man City have not been very busy in the transfer market over the summer as they just have one major addition in the form of Riyad Mahrez, while the Gunners have completed 5 major signings.

Here is everything you need to learn about the encounter between the Gunners and the Premier League Champions this weekend.

Manchester City: Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne are ready to play for City, despite just returning to training this week. Danilo has been sidelined as he picked up an injury during the World Cup with Brazil, while David Silva is also under the treatment and has been absent throughout City’s pre-season campaign.

Score Prediction

Arsenal 2 – 3 Manchester City: During their pre-season campaign, the Gunners have been phenomenal but City were outstanding last weekend against Chelsea in their Community Shield match showing that their title-winning spark isn’t over yet. Therefore, the match seems to be leaning in the favour of Manchester City but we can never really predict Premier League football.

FIFA World Cup 2018: Team Profiles – Argentina Football Team

Lionel Messi Argentina Football Team Captain

Argentina Football Team (FC) took the hard way to qualify for the World cup finals. They needed to win the final group game against Ecuador to be sure of a place, and things didn’t start well when they went down by a goal in the first few minutes of the game. It yet again took the magic of their captain Lionel Messi who scored a hattrick, to take them to Russia. In a campaign to forget, they had three managers and lost embarrassingly to Paraguay, Ecuador, and Brazil at home and managed to muster only seven wins from their 18 games played.

Another horrible statistic showed that only Bolivia had fewer goals than Argentina Foot, a country that is blessed with attacking talent with the likes of Aguero and Higuaín and arguably the greatest player in the world in the form of their captain, Lionel Messi. And the Barcelona forward will yet again shoulder the burden of an expecting nation in Russia.

Player to Watch Out:

Lionel Messi

For many, He is the greatest Football player to ever play the game and a world cup winner’s medal will only strengthen their case. After another great season with Barcelona, the great man will be desperate to fill his international trophy cabinet, but the question is can he do it all by himself? If he does, it would surely be his greatest ever achievement and might even propel him to the top of the list of the greatest players in the world.

FIFA world ranking: 5

Coach: Jorge Sampaoli

Captain: Lionel Messi

Nickname: La Albiceleste (The White and Sky Blue)

World Cup history: Qualified 17 times (1930, 1934, 1958, 1962, 1966, 1974, 1978*, 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018)
*Qualified as hosts

Best World Cup result: Winners (1978, 1986)

TAB odds: 9-1

Prediction:

Argentina Football Team should make the quarterfinals easily but their dependence on Messi to get them out of every troubling situation makes it seem like they won’t go any further in the tournament. But the fact of the matter is, nothing is impossible when you have a man called Lionel Messi leading your team out onto the pitch.

Predicted Manchester City Starting 11- 2018/19 Season

Manchester City

Manchester City broke a number of records last season in their colossal title-winning campaign. Pep Guardiola‘s side played scintillating football which garnered a lot of attention from the world. Their whole squad had been nothing short of perfect, as they won the league with a record 100 points; it was Manchester City’s best season ever. Pep has decided not to delve in early in the transfer market this summer but has been linked with a couple of big money moves. Let’s take a look at a possible Manchester City side for next season if things go their way.

GK: Ederson Moraes

Ederson has been absolutely brilliant since making his switch to the Etihad. The 24-year old stopper was credited with 16 clean sheets, second to only Golden Glove recipient, David De Gea and also conceded the least amount of goals. His sweeper keeper style has been detrimental to Manchester City’s success last season and he’s bound to keep the no.1 spot all to himself.

RB: Kyle Walker

Another player who turned out to be immensely successful under Pep, as Walker lifted his first Premier League trophy after making a switch from White Hart Lane this season. He played 32 matches, making 6 assists,  26 dribbles, 31 clearances, 29 interceptions and completed 2,073 passes and 30 key passes. The 28-year old England international is highly unlikely to lose his place in the team.

CB: Nicolás Otamendi

Otamendi played 3 seasons for the club and this one was his finest. The 30-year old defender made 34 appearances and scored 4 goals on four separate occasions. The Argentinean boasted impressive stats such as 2,825 passes, 43 tackles, 122 clearances and 48 interceptions.

CB: John Stones

While Stones could just play in 18 matches this season, he still had a good run of performances for the club. The 24-year old completed 1,194 passes, 11 tackles, 41 clearances and 19 interceptions. He seems like the best choice for Pep to partner with Otamendi next season, barely cut above Laporte and Kompany.

LB: Benjamin Mendy

One of the most anticipated signings of the Premier League, young Benjamin Mendy had the world at his feet as everyone expected the 23-year old Frenchman to light up the Premier League just like he did Ligue 1. That was not to be due to the unfortunate season-ending injury he suffered early in the season. While Delph had more than made up for his loss, Mendy is fit again and going to the World Cup where he is likely to claim his spot on the team back.

CDM: Jorginho

While Fernandinho was undoubtedly one of the best midfielders in the league last season, he is 33 going on 34 and will find it difficult to produce similar results next season, especially as it is the toughest league in the world. Pep is reportedly close to signing Napoli superstar Jorginho (for about £50m)  who would be the successor to Manchester City stalwart, Yaya Toure who left at the end of the season.

CM: David Silva

Fan favorite midfield maestro David Silva had one of his best seasons yet scoring 9 goals and assisting 11 in his 29 appearances. The 32-year old Premier League veteran was apparently going through some personal problems but he overcame them proving to be a vital asset in City’s campaign last season. The Spanish genius is bound to keep his place in Pep’s side next season.

CM: Kevin De Bruyne

The best player in City’s 100-point campaign last season was none other than Premier League Play-maker of the Year, Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian superstar featured in 37 games scoring 8 goals and holding a league-high record of 16 assists and was the key to City’s successful campaign this season. De Bruyne is set to be the most important player for next season for City.

LW: Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling was another major weapon in City’s arsenal. With 18 goals and 11 assists, the 23-year old winger had his most productive season yet and was among the few elite players to reach double figures in both goals and assists. The England international is one player who is set to keep his place in City’s side next season.

RW: Riyad Mahrez

Riyad Mahrez proved his worth as a player once again after Leicester had an average season but he still turned up with 12 goals and 10 assists to join the few players to reach double figures in goals and assists. The Algerian is linked with a £75m move to the Etihad and he will be the prime candidate to break into the first team, likely at the expense of 22-year old youngster Leroy Sane.

CF: Sergio Agüero

One of the most prolific strikers in the Premier League or rather the world has ever seen had yet another productive season with 21 goals and 6 assists in just 25 matches. Year after year Sergio Agüero proves himself as one of the best in the world without even a hint of slowing down. Even with young Jesus coming in form, Agüero is another player who will be difficult to replace.

PFA Premier League Team of the Year 2017/18; Who has made the list?

Premier League Team of the year

The PFA Premier League Team of the Year was announced earlier this year where Pep Guardiola’s side dominated the sheet, rightfully because of their individual and team performances this season. Let’s take a look at the eleven players who made it and analyse how they earned their place in this elite team.

Goalkeeper: David De Gea (Manchester United)

De Gea had a terrific season with the club this season as he helped United finish second earning applauds from critics as well as fans. The recipient of the Premier League Golden Glove this season held the league highest of 18 clean sheets and is the only player from Manchester United to earn a place in this team.

Right-back: Kyle Walker (Manchester City)

Kyle Walker finally achieved his dream to win the Premier League after near misses in his former team Tottenham Hotspur. The English International got a big-money move to City from Spurs last summer and was a regular in Guardiola’s side making 32 appearances and putting in 6 assists for the team.

Centre-back: Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham)

Tottenham skipper Jan Vertonghen has featured in 36 games for the club making 64 tackles, 60 interceptions, and 170 clearances. The Belgian International was a rock at the centre of Tottenham’s defence last season and had to make up for Davinson Sanchez’s inexperience and Toby Alderwierald’s injury prone season, rightfully earning a place in this team.

Centre-back: Nicolas Otamendi (Manchester City)

Nicolas Otamendi played a huge role in the defensive side on City’s title-winning campaign last season. The 30-year old Argentinian made 34 appearances scoring 4 goals and making numerous defensive contributions; 58 tackles, 48 interceptions and 122 clearances; he also made 3,074 passes which is the 2nd highest in the league.

Left-back — Marcos Alonso (Chelsea)

Marcos Alonso is a left-back who is more than capable of contributing to the attacking side of the team and he showed that this season by scoring 7 goals and assisting another 2 in 33 games. Chelsea had a relatively poor season which was not expected from the previous champions but Alonso certainly gave his best for the club which has earned him a spot on this team.

Centre Midfield: David Silva (Manchester City)

Fan favorite midfield maestro David Silva had one of his best seasons yet scoring 9 goals and assisting 11 in his 29 appearances. The 32-year old Premier League veteran was apparently going through some personal problems but he overcame them proving to be a vital asset in City’s campaign last season.

Centre Midfield: Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)

The best player in City’s 100-point campaign last season was none other than Premier League Play-maker of the Year, Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian superstar featured in 37 games scoring 8 goals and holding a league-high record of 16 assists and was the key to City’s successful campaign this season.

Centre Midfield: Christian Eriksen (Tottenham)

With 10 goals and 10 assists, Eriksen is one of the few players to reach double figures in both goals and assists count this season. Often regarded as one of the most underrated midfielders in the world, The Danish play-maker was an important figure in Tottenham’s squad.

Right-Forward: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

PFA Player of the Year, Mohamed Salah has finished this season as one of Premier League’s greatest ever as set a new record of League’s highest goals scored in a season, 32 and made 10 assists as well. The Egyptian winger made history and his spot on this team is quite literally untouchable.

Left-Forward: Sergio Agüero (Manchester City)

One of the most prolific strikers in the Premier League or rather the world has ever seen had yet another productive season with 21 goals and 6 assists in just 25 matches. Year after year Sergio Agüero proves himself as one of the best in the world without even a hint of slowing down.

Centre-Forward: Harry Kane (Tottenham)

Newly appointed England Captain and the hero of all the Spurs fans around the world, Harry Kane has played his most prolific season yet scoring 30 goals in 37 games. The 24-year striker old still has the whole world at his feet and is undoubtedly regarded as one of the world’s best.
