India vs West Indies | Team India's ODI Squad Announced by BCCI

The 14 member squad of Team India for the ODI series against West Indies have been announced by the BCCI selectors. Let’s see who made the list!

The squad has been picked of Team India for the first two ODI matches against West Indies.

The first ODI against West Indies will be played at Guwahati on 21st October 2018 and the 2nd One Day International match will be played on 24th October 2018 at Visakhapatnam.

Rishab Pant gets a maiden ODI call-up – After his decent show in the test arena, Rishab Pant has called for the first two ODI matches against West Indies. He is the part of that 14 member squad but will he get a chance in India’s Probable 11? Only time will tell. But the selectors have gone a step further, there are thinking ahead of Dhoni. MS Dhoni can’t finish the games like he used to do in his heydays. That’s where selectors have picked Rishab Pant. The dashing wicketkeeper batsmen from Delhi will have to bat number 6 if he gets a chance.

Virat Kohli named as the Captain – Kohli’s workload is an issue for India’s plans. The selectors and team management have to address Kohli’s workload. Due to this load, Kohli also missed the Asia Cup in Dubai. But thankfully it did not hurt India. With captaining in the test matches, Kohli will captain India in the 50 over format too. He has been named in the 14 member squad of the ODI team against the Windies.

Bhuvi and Bumrah rested again – After the hectic schedule of the Asia Cup, India’s premier fast bowlers have rested for the first 2 ODI matches as well. The selectors are not any chances before the all-important Australian tour which start from November 2018. That’s why Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah have been given a rest. They are likely to back in the squad from the 3rd ODI. Khaleel Ahmed, Shardul Thakur, and Mohd Shami have made to the team in the absence of Bhuvi and Bumrah.

Dinesh Karthik out and Manish Pandey in – Dinesh Karthik has been axed from the ODI squad. He didn’t make to the 14 member squad for the Windies series despite playing some decent knocks. Instead, the selectors have given a chance to Manish Pandey but Pandey hasn’t used the opportunity well. He played for well for India A but in the match against Afghanistan, he ruined his chances. Still, Manish Pandey made it to the 14 member ODI squad.

Ravindra Jadeja Back in the ODI squad – Ravindra Jadeja adds a lot to the ODI team as he does for the Test team. He is the perfect all-rounder that India needs in their ODI set up. He can bat, he can bowl and he is one of the best fielders that India has in their team. Jadeja has replaced Axar Patel.

KL Rahul: Naam toh suna hoga

The Indian Cricket team is blessed with some really talented batsman and often have a problem of plenty, too many batsmen, and no space to accommodate them all. The IPL has helped sort this problem giving everyone an opportunity to perform at the big stage and prove to the selectors that they’re worthy of a place in that elusive eleven that our country pins all its hopes on.

One such player who has been in and out of the Indian side is KL Rahul, the Mangalore born Wicketkeeper Batsman has had a terrific 2018 IPL and was definitely one of the only consistent positives in Kings XI Punjab’s inconsistent campaign. Rahul finished the Season as the third highest run scorer with 659 runs, with 6 half-centuries, an average of 54.91, strike-rate of a 158.40 and is also now the record holder of the fastest fifty in IPL history reaching the milestone in just 14 balls with 6 fours and 4 sixes. All this from a player who was labeled a Test Specialist.

Rahul’s consistent performance in the IPL has earned him a call-up in all three formats for the upcoming tour of England and the one-off Afghanistan Test in Bangalore. Rahul’s technique and timing are his greatest strengths, barring some unorthodox sweep shots this season majority of Rahul’s shots have been elegant, proper cricketing shots. The sweetness with which he finds the middle of the bat and the sheer elegance with which he has gone about his game has been nothing short of commendable, Rahul has been an absolute treat to watch.

Here’s why the BCCI selectors need to seriously consider Rahul as a regular in all three formats, firstly Rahul without any sinew of doubt has the most effortless batting style and strong technique after captain Virat Kohli, to make his case stronger Rahul is just 26 years old and is entering the prime years of his career. Rahul has already proven himself at the international level and is the only Batsman after Suresh Raina to have scored a Century in all three formats for India, he has cemented his side in the Test team and it’s only a matter of time before he becomes a regular in the ODI and T20I team as well.

But in my opinion, Rahul’s strongest asset and something that could really help him in the future, is his wicket-keeping. MS Dhoni is without a doubt India’s best keeper-batsman at the moment, but the Legendary ‘captain cool’ will turn 37 this year, which would mean that very soon India will have to fill the void of not only a great captain and personality but also of a very good Keeper. Here’s where Rahul comes in, keeping wickets for the Kings XI Punjab, KL has been safe behind the wickets with 11 dismissals and looked comfortable while KXIP’s spin trio of Mujeeb, Axar, and Ashwin was bowling as well. If Rahul can consistently do well with the big gloves on, India wouldn’t have to sacrifice a batsman for a specialist keeper.

I hope your reading BCCI! KL Rahul is here to stay.
