Shakhtar Donetsk vs Manchester City | UEFA Champions League

Manchester City sealed a comfortable 3 – 0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

Both Davidย Silva and Bernardo Silva got their names on the scoresheet against Shakhtar. Aymeric Laporteย also managed to score a header as Manchester City achieved a convincing win in Group F. The result moves City top of Group F after Hoffenheim managed to earn a 3 – 3 draw against Lyon.

Manchester City were the dominant side in the first half and should have scored a couple of goals early in the game due to the numerous chances they created.

Gabriel Jesus came close to opening the scoreline but was denied by goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov while Riyad Mahrez‘s strike beat the keeper but was excellently blocked by defender Yaroslav Rakitskiy. David Silva hit the woodwork from Mahrez’s cross and the rebound is thwarted off target by Jesus.

City were applying constant pressure and were finally rewarded at the half-hour mark when David Silva drilled a low volley past the keeper after Jesus’s shot was deflected skywards.

Just five minutes later Aymeric Laporte stooped above the others and directs a powerful header in the top corner. Gabriel Jesus almost made the score 3-0 as he fired a powerful shot which whizzed just over the bar right before the break.

City seemed more relaxed at the beginning of the second half but still managed to create a host of goalscoring opportunities when David Silva had his shot blocked and Mahrez just missed the target by inches.

Manchester City stopper Ederson was called into action for the first time as Ismaily hit a left-footed shot which was stopped at full stretch by the Brazillian keeper.

It was clear that City were going to add another to their tally as the chances kept on coming and they finally added a third when Bernardo Silva, who came on just 90 seconds ago, drove towards the box and found the net with a low drive which went in off the post om the 70th minute.

The Premier League champions were relentless as they kept on attacking with increasing vigor and Raheem Sterling rattled the bar in the dying minutes of the game.

Although more difficult tests lie ahead for Manchester City, this was quite a remarkable reaction to Guardiola‘s pre-match remarks about the team, claiming his side still lack “something special” to win the UEFA Champions League.

Manchester City travel to Tottenham on Tuesday, 30th October before facing Fulham in the Carabao Cup on Friday, 2nd November. Their next Champions League tie will be against Shakhtar again in the return fixture at the Etihad on Thursday, 8th November.
