France comes into the game having already conquered a South American opponent in the last 16, defeating Argentina in a seven-goal thriller. They also topped Group C with relative comfort, but Les Blues induced plenty of criticism in the process for the unconvincing quality of their performances.
However, those critiques disappeared somewhat after their exciting Mbappe-inspired win over Argentina in the last 16, which saw Deschamp’s side take a step above a level.
Uruguay, meanwhile, booked their place in the last eight by beating a relatively poor Portugal side. With the likes of Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez at the back, Oscar Tabarez‘s side is established on a solid defensive foundation – one that allows them to work off the counter-attack by quickly getting the ball forward to the likes of Luis Suarez.

The clash on Friday sees two former world champions go head to head, but the stature of the two teams stands in firm contrast, with France considered the favorites to advance. However, the road does not get easier for either side afterward, with a semi-final tie against either Brazil or Belgium awaiting the victory en route to the final.
France: Olivier Giroud will likely start in attack in order to engage Uruguay’s solid centre-backs while Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe would line up either side of him in a 4-3-3. Blaise Matuidi’s suspension for the game would mean Corentin Tolisso is likely to come into the midfield.
Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani is likely to miss his country's World Cup quarterfinal clash with France on Friday, sources tell ESPN. https://t.co/HDysSX9Ute

Uruguay: Uruguay have concerns lingering over Edinson Cavani, who was their star against Argentina after the PSG striker sustained a hamstring strain. The 31-year-old is in a race against time to prove his fitness for the game and could be displaced in the starting XI by Cristhian Stuani.
France: Lloris | Pavard, Varane, Umtiti, Hernandez | Kante, Tolisso, Pogba | Griezmann, Mbappe, Giroud.
Uruguay: Muslera | Laxalt, Godin, Gimenez, Caceres | Bentancur, Torreira, Vecino, Nandez | Stuani, Suarez.
France: Kylian Mbappe has been nothing short of extraordinary this World Cup. The 19-year old PSG star has already scored 3 goals in his 3 starts forFrance. He was phenomenal against the Argentinians, winning a penalty and scoring a brace in a match that ended 4-3. Mbappe will surely hope to contribute more to his country.
Uruguay: Luis Suarez has played in all 4 of Uruguay’s matches in this World Cup, scoring 2 goals and assisting 1 in the process. The Barcelona striker remains the biggest threat to France, especially with the absence of fellow striking partner Edinson Cavani.

France 3 – 2 Uruguay: What happens when you put an unstoppable force against an immovable object. That is exactly what it will be like when France meet Uruguay. The deadly French attack will likely pierce the mighty Uruguayan shield but not without getting a few scars.
