Ghezzal – Leicester sign Algerian winger from Monaco

Rachid Ghezzal - Leicester sign Algerian winger from Monaco

Leicester City have completed the signing of winger Rachid Ghezzal from AS Monaco for an undisclosed fee.

The move sees the Algeria international reconvene with Leicester boss Claude Puel, who was in charge of Lyon as the winger advanced through the Club’s academy. Ghezzal signs a 4-year-deal with the Premier League side.

Speaking about the move, Leicester City manager Claude Puel said: “I’m very pleased to welcome Rachid to Leicester City Football Club. He’s an exciting addition to our group who will bring creativity and competition ahead of an important season for us. I know his qualities from my time at Lyon, where he was in the academy, and I look forward to seeing him test himself in the Premier League.”

Ghezzal entered Lyon’s academy as a 12-year-old and signed his first professional contract with the club in 2010. He spent two years with Lyon B before being promoted to the first team and made his senior debut in 2012 against Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona in the UEFA Europa League.

The 26-year-old made his senior debut for Algeria in 2015 and played in each of the group stage games at the 2017 African Cup of Nations. Ghezzal actually represented France at under-20 level before playing for Algeria as a senior international. He made his national team debut against Qatar in 2015 and has since earned 13 caps.

Ghezzal produced his most prolific campaign for Lyon in 2015/16 when he scored 8 goals in 29 Ligue 1 games. In his final season with the club, the winger made 25 appearances as his side reached the UEFA Europa League semi-final and finished 4th in Ligue 1. The winger finished his time at Lyon with a record of 14 goals and 20 assists in his 110 matches

Just last summer, the winger signed for French champions AS Monaco and made 33 appearances for the club including 4 appearances in the UEFA Champions League in his debut season. Now Ghezzal is set to play for Leicester City in the top flight of English football.

Speaking to LCFC TV, Ghezzal said: “I’m very excited and very happy to be here. I know the coach from Lyon and this is where I want to be. It’s a good Club and an ambitious one too. Leicester City has many great players and I hope we will have a great season.”

Ghezzal becomes the club’s 5th signing of the summer – coming as a like-for-like replacement for fellow Algeria international Riyad Mahrez – after the additions of Jonny Evans, James Maddison, Ricardo Pereira and Danny Ward.

Leicester faces Manchester United at Old Trafford in their opening Premier League game of the campaign on Saturday.
