IPL Match 55, Post-Match Analysis: MI out of the running for Playoffs

IPL 2018 | Match 55 | DD vs MI: The Delhi Daredevils have pushed the Mumbai Indians out of the running for the playoffs at Delhi yesterday.

DD won the toss and opted to bat. DD got off to a bad start with openers, Prithvi Shaw (12) and Glenn Maxwell (22), getting out within an over of each other. By the end of power-play, the team had lost both their openers and had managed only 46 runs.

Rishabh Pant, however, then came in to replace Maxwell and had a brilliant knock of 64 runs off 44 balls laced with four boundaries and four sixes. He not only secured his fifth IPL fifty but also took the Orange Cap back from Kane Williamson with 684 runs. He brought his team back into the game and helped them post a challenging score of 174 for four.

Captain Shreyas Iyer had a very short phase on the field as he was dismissed by Mayank Markande. But he gave way for Vijay Shankar who added another 43 runs to the scoreboard. His partnership with Pant brought 64 runs for the fourth wicket. Pant was then taken off the field by Krunal Pandya in the seventeenth over, but it didn’t matter as a good base had already been built. Abhishek Sharma’s small undefeated cameo added another 15 runs.

MI bowlers were unable to synchronize with one another. Krunal Pandya finished with a figure of 1/11 in two overs while his brother, Hardik Pandya, conceded 36 runs in his four overs. Mayank Markande (1/21) and Jasprit Bumrah (1/29) took one wicket each. While the rest allowed DD for a smooth finish.

With a target of 175 to chase, MI had a rocky start too as they lost Suryakumar Yadav (12) very cheaply in the first over. Evin Lewis (48) and Ishan Kishan (5) made up for the loss, however, but both departed soon after the power play. After their dismissals, none of the other batsmen could tick including Rohit Sharma (13) who has been in and out of form this season. Hardik Pandya’s 17 balls 27 and Ben Cutting’s 20 balls 37, however, bought them a chance to reach the target. With 18 left off of the last over, Harshal Patel took Cutting and Jasprit Bumrah out, ending the innings for the Mumbai Indians at 163 – all out.

“Disappointing that we didn’t get over the finish line. There are a lot of things where I can look back and say that ‘we didn’t do this right, we didn’t do that right’ but looking at how the first half went, we gave ourselves a chance and in the second half we played really good cricket,” captain Rohit Sharma said after Sunday’s defeat.

Sandeep Lamichhane, Harshal Patel, and Amit Mishra took three wickets each, bringing endgame to the Mumbai Indians. Harshal Patel’s final two wickets won DD the game and eliminated all chances of MI surviving the match with a win, as they failed to make the playoffs.

MI’s downfall has been its inconsistency. With a roller-coaster of a season, they had a weak start, a filmy comeback and ended with a loss in their most important match this season. It wasn’t Rohit Sharma’s season either as it became the first IPL in which he did not pass the 300-mark. A win would have directly pushed them to fourth place with no threat with their NRR.

DD, on the other hand, was the first team to be out of the running for the playoffs. They, however, found the spark that they were unable to bring out during the better part of the season and ended their time in the tournament with two massive wins back to back. They have proved to be a force to be reckoned with and will hopefully, continue the in-form performances in the next season.

IPL 2018, Post-Match Analysis: CSK face unexpected defeat by DD

IPL 2018 | Match 52 | DD vs CSK: Delhi Daredevils defeated the Chennai Super Kings last night by 34 runs at the Feroz Shah Kotla. Although this win has come too late for the Delhi boys, they can live with the satisfaction of playing a fantastic game and having a hand in postponing CSK’s assured finish in the top two.

CSK won the toss and chose to bowl. They started the innings at a slow rate with openers, Prithvi Shaw (17) and Shreyas Iyer (19). DD lost Shaw cheaply to Deepak Chahar in the fifth over. They managed only 39 runs in power-play. Rishabh Pant (38) partnered with the captain for 54 runs before both were taken out in the same over by Lungi Ngidi. The two major wickets left the field right after Pant scored two sixes and a boundary resulting in 17 runs off Harbhajan Singh‘s over. Glenn Maxwell remained out-of-form as he took a ball to the stumps from Ravindra Jadeja. Vijay Shankar‘s undefeated run added 36 runs to the scoreboard. He partnered with Harshal Patel (36) to finish the last five overs with another fifty runs. The innings ended with a respectable total of 162 for five.

Harshal Patel went on to be titled “Man of the Match” for his spectacular addition to the score – a whopping 36 off 16, including four sixes and one four.

CSK seemed out of touch with the game from the first innings. Dwayne Bravo, their star player, himself was hammered for 52 runs off his four overs, including four sixes in the final over. Even veteran Harbhajan was taken to the cleaners by the DD batsmen. Jadeja, SN Thakur, and Chahar took a wicket each leaving 20 or so runs. Only Lungi Ngidi had a good run of four overs as he took two crucial wickets and conceded only 14 runs.

With a target of 163 to chase, CSK fans were confident that this will be a piece of cake for the Yellow Brigade. CSK also had a slow start as openers Shane Watson (14) and Ambati Rayudu (50) put up a mere 44 runs for power-play. But in the sixth over, the duo gained momentum as Rayudu scored three sixes and one four off of Avesh Khan’s bowling. Just when Watson was gaining his footing, he fell victim to Amit Mishra‘s bowling as Trent Boult sent him home. Rayudu continued his form and went on to score a fifty off 28 balls only to be dismissed by Harshal Patel mid-innings. Suresh Raina (15) came in to replace Watson and scored a run here and there until he was dismissed by newbie Sandeep Lamichhane. Sam Billings (1) also left the field soon enough. It soon came on Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni (17) to carry the team forward to victory. However, even Dhoni with the massive fan following, who has come through always during crucial times for the team, seemed swayed by DD’s impressive fielding. An uncalculated hit in Trent Boult’s over gave Iyer the opportunity to seal his fate. With fifty runs left off of the final five overs, Jadeja’s undefeated cameo of 27 runs and Dwayne Bravo’s almost immediate dismissal did not help their case. The innings ended with a victory for the Delhi Daredevils by 34 runs.

DD showcased some impressive fielding last night as even the death-over champions found themselves trapped. Both Trent Boult and Amit Mishra finished with impressive figures of 2/20 – all four were crucial wickets at crucial times. Sandeep Lamicchane continued impressing with 1/21. Harshal Patel contributed to the bowling side as well with one wicket and conceding only 23 runs off his four overs. Glenn Maxwell (0/14) and Avesh Khan (0/28) were given two overs each.

CSK remains in second place with 16 points but with a significantly lower run rate. A win could have put them on top of the table and at a tie with the Sunrisers Hyderabad, however, their fazed performance last night prevented them from doing so. This has come as a huge disappointment for the loyal CSK fans but maybe it was required to wake the MS Dhoni-led side up before the crucial week starts. DD is already out of the tournament but the team will look to end their appearance this season with a final win.

CSK will clash with Kings XI Punjab tomorrow night for their final home game while DD will be facing the Mumbai Indians for their final game of the season tomorrow as well.

IPL 2018 | Match 52 | DD vs CSK: Chennai Super Kings will be looking to catch up with table-toppers Sunrisers Hyderabad as they clash against the Delhi Daredevils tonight at Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi.

Delhi Daredevils are out of the running for the playoffs as they remain at the bottom of the table with 6 points. With nine losses in the twelve games they’ve played, DD failed to make a comeback like the rest of teams at the bottom did and has now lost its chance this season to make any significant change to its position.

CSK, on the other hand, have won eight matches of twelve and will look to gain that two more points that would place them at par with the Sunrisers, before they head to the playoffs. With their net run rate, they will replace SRH on top with a victory tonight and will secure a spot in the top two.

Today’s weather forecast has the warning of probable rain and relatively cooler temperatures. Feroz Shah Kotla has always been known to be batsman-friendly.

A win for the Delhi Daredevils will not do much good as they are six points behind Kings XI Punjab, who are placed seventh. However, with young and ambitious Shreyas Iyer as the captain, they will play for the sake of their dignity and self-respect. CSK is the more probable, some might say definite, winners tonight.

Head-to-head, DD has clashed with CSK seventeen times previously, of which they have won only five times. Even at Kotla, DD’s home base, CSK has had a better running.

CSK has had a good season after the two years ban from the IPL. With the change of venue from Chennai to Pune, they have still managed to gain footing. They have had consistent performances and have provided entertaining matches for all cricket fans to enjoy. They have also been the only team to have defended themselves against SRH’s bowling attack both matches this season.

With their deadly opener duo of Ambati Rayudu and Shane Watson, the team has chased high totals and emerged victoriously. Especially Rayudu’s performance this season with 535 runs across twelve matches, he is a contender for the orange cap. Even MS Dhoni was found to only have words of praise after his unbeaten century against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in their last match.

“Even before IPL started I had to make space for Rayudu because he is somebody I rate very highly. He can play both the fast bowlers and spinners very well. Most teams look to exploit the opener with spin bowling. He is someone who does not look like a big hitter but almost clears the field every time he plays the big shot.”, Dhoni was stated as saying.

Watson has also had an exceptional performance with 424 runs in his pocket.

Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja will take care of the bowling front with Shardul Thakur and Dwayne Bravo at the head.

DD, on the other hand, lies on the opposite side of the spectrum with their issue being inconsistency and lack of coordination. With big names like Rishabh Pant, Glenn Maxwell, Gautam Gambhir, Mohammed Shami, they were unable to bring them all together and form a solid wall against any team. With the change in captaincy, they seemed to be doing well as they won three matches back to back, but as soon as they tasted defeat again, they found themselves unable to stand back up.

Sandeep Lamichhane, Abhishek Sharma, and Junior Dala made their IPL debuts in DD’s last match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore and will be expected to make an appearance again. Spinner Sandeep opened the bowling debut for the Delhi boys last time while Sharma impressed with his unbeaten 46 off 19 balls. Dala, however, was unable to make an impression as he conceded 34 runs in 3 overs with no wickets. CSK will mostly stick with the same lineup with a position in the top two on the line.

This game may be a dead end but with ferocious CSK supporters and loyal DD fans in the stadium, this may just turn out to be a match for respect rather than the points.
