Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning overhead kick for Real Madrid against his current team Juventus in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League was voted as the best goal of the season at UEFA.com. The Juventus fans applauded Ronaldo’s magical goal and little did they know that the great man will turn up in their colors in the Champions League this time out. He topped the poll with almost 200,000 votes of a total of 346,915 votes. Ronaldo succeeds his new teammate Mario Mandzukic who won the award last year for his goal against Ronaldo’s old team Real Madrid in the final of the UEFA Champions League. While the two previous years before Mandzukic’s win, the award was won by Lionel Messi in 2014/15 as well as 2015/16. 

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo, took to Twitter to thank his fans for voting for him. He also says that it was a very special moment in his career and that he would never forget it. He also had praise for his new fans. He says in his post that the warm reception he received from the away fans (now his home) made the goal even more special than what it already was. 

The runner-up was Dimitri Payet’s goal in Marseille’s 5-2 UEFA Europa League defeat of RB Leipzig, while third place went to Eva Navarro’s goal for Spain in their Women’s U17 Euro final victory against Germany in Lithuania in May. The eleven nominees were selected by the UEFA technical observers over the course of 12 months, and one was selected from each of the major UEFA competitions. Goals scored by players will only be eligible for consideration of the goal was scored in a UEFA club or international level competition. Ronaldo’s goal was undoubtedly one of the best goals in the history of the competition and it is only right that it was awarded the best goal of the season of the season by UEFA.
