The tussle to become the forward of the season was a big one in store for the UEFA Champions League. The likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Antoine Greizmann was always going to be on the list of scorers.

However, this time it was different from the other times. Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Greizmann finished outside the top-5 for the first time in the last three years. There was a clear winner at the end of the knock-out stages, and it was Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 33-year-old winger, who is now plying his trade in the Serie A with Juventus emerged as the top-scorer in the league. Ronaldo, with Real Madrid, had made 13 appearances in the Champions League while scoring 15 goals. Further, the 33-year-old also assisted his teammates thrice in the competition with 1,170 minutes of work put in.

Ronaldo was a unanimous choice for the Best striker with the decision being made by the 33 coaches alongside the journalists. A panel of 55 Journalists accompanied by the 33 coaches take a decision and vote for the best player in a certain position.

Ronaldo received 287 points:

Coaches were not allowed to vote for players from their own teams. The first choice made by the jury gets 5 points, while the second obtains three. One point is awarded to the third player selected by the jury.

Ronaldo had received 287 points, which was 69 points more than Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

Salah with 218 points finished second behind the Real Madrid striker with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi finishing third. The left-footed Argentinian got a total of 43 points as Barcelona crashed out of the competition in the quarter-finals against AS Roma.

Ronaldo also has his presence in the Fan’s XI of the Champions League and the Official squad of the league.

“Cristiano is the best player in the history of football. There are lots of players, for example at this club, who have made history, but nobody has achieved what he’s achieved. The numbers speak for themselves and they’re incredible.” said Zidane following the Champions League victory over Liverpool in May.
